I am purchasing a Hobart Handler 140 online today and wanted to use CO2 with the flux core wire but Im not sure of the type of CO2 bottle I can use. I had a friend with the smaller Hobart who said he just went to Academy and got a small $20 bottle (paintball) but I noticed some conversion kits being sold for the Hobart Handlers for attaching CO2 bottles. I was under the impression that they were already setup for shielding gases and would rather buy a CO2 bottle that would work on the stock HH140. I found the two types of bottles below, will either one work without buying an additional kit?1.http://www.walmart.com/ip/JT-CO2-Tank-20-oz/197656882.[ame]http://www.amazon.com/New-Aluminum-lb-Tank--Empty/dp/B0064OF6KA/ref=sr_1_11?s=industrial&ie=UTF8&qid=1369752453&sr  =1-11&keywords=co2+tank[/ame]Thank you!
Reply:With flux core, you don't need gas.(unless dual shield)

Reply:Short answer : No.Longer answer : You use the shielding gas (or not) and the parameters (which include the shielding gas) appropriate for the specific wire you are using.Flux-core (FCAW, flux core arc welding) wires come in two main 'flavors',  FCAW-S (self-shielding fluxcore arc welding) which uses no external shielding gas and FCAW-G (gas-shielded fluxcore arc welding aka 'dual-shield', which is actually a  name for ESAB's FCAW-G wires) which does use some sort of external shielding gas.You do NOT use a shielding gas with an FCAW-S wire, and you MUST use a shielding gas (of the appropriate type) with an FCAW-G wire. And the HH140 most likely does not have the correct voltage-amperage profile to use with an FCAW-G (aka dual-shield) wire anyway, even if you could get in in a spool size that fits in the HH140 compartment (FCAW-G wires -usually- come on the 'bigger' spools and in bigger wire diameters which would fit or work on the HH140 anyway, although some wires are listed as 'available' on 15 lb plastic spools).Hmmm, ESAB DualShield 7100 Ultra, 0.035 wire on a 15 lb plastic spool (8" diameter spool) using 100% CO2, lowest parameters listed as 110-135 amps @ 23-25V and 220-330 ipm WFS.  I don't think the HH140 can do those parameters.  The best laid schemes ... Gang oft agley ...
Reply:Thanks for the info, found the source of my confusion. My friend was actually welding with 100% CO2 and regular wire. Also figured out that a CO2 tank has a male valve and requires an adapter to work with the regulator (Designed for mixed gas tank) that comes with the Hobart 140.
Reply:I have an old Hobart Handler. I do not even know what its designation is.  I run .030 wire in it and .025 for body work.  I found that c02 tanks from fire extinguishers are very inexpensive and can be readily filled. Mac

Reply:Plain wire with gas make for much nicer beads.Moonrise is on the money.CO2 is the cheapest gas and unlike C25, is is a liquid state in the bottle.  So a small bottle of CO2 contains a MUCH bigger volume of gas than a similarly sized bottlee of other gas.And don't forget to change the polarity of your machine.  FCAW runs on electrode negative, Wire and gas on electrode positive.  There should be a little diagram in the machine for this.TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum
