today i was in welding school and we started talking about being a CWI i was wondering how many people here are cwi? what are the perks or downfalls of this job? would it be worth getting trained to do?
Reply:I am retired now but in my past I took a similar course and set of tests for welding inspector for the Canadian Welding Bureau.  Many of the people in the class had minimal welding experience.  Some qualified from having an engineering degree or from technical training in materials science.  Wages for a beginning inspector did not come close to what a journeyman welder would make.   The big advantage for me was that with one more quick code test I was a qualified welding supervisor.  Several times this made me lead hand on evening shift since code required a company welding supervisor on every shift.  I never renewed my welding inspector ticket since it had to be renewed every two years but supervisor is lifetime.  If you don't like holding people's hands and nursing them along while getting feedback about work done on the previous shift from your dayshift foreman who is nursing his own personal stomach ulcer.... well you get the drift.   Doing the course and tests gives a welder a better understanding about what is required and helps in mantaining your own quality control.  Lastly if your knees are giving out and you want something easier on the old body later on in life this is a good career move.
