I picked up a used N-Midget off Ebay. Got it today and was happy to see an N-1 tip as I wanted the torch for 18-20 ga sheetmetal. Miked out the tip "hole" and found it was about drill size 66 which is much larger than a N-1 tip should be according to the tip chart I found on the web (it said #70)Anyway, I tried it and it was like a damned blowtorch! The tip has a number of radial slots around the central hole rather like a cutting torch head or a rosebud.Very strange....I was thinking at this point maybe this is a propane tip, BUT it is marked N-1, the propane tips are supposedly marked ox-.Anyone know what kind of critter I have here?Second question, I had read that Kent White had had some tips made up to older specifications because the newer Victor tips are crap. However, I looked on the Tinman site and there was no mention of this. Anyone know if the tips KW sells on his website are modern Victor or better than modern Victor?thanks....
Reply:Looks like you may have a heating tip, which sounds correct for what you are saying why don't you post a picture of it or your ebay link, could be the manufacturers designation, Victor welding tips goes to 000 to 8, if your going to weld sheetmetal your going to need a 0 and No 1.
Reply:Here's a picture of the tip. It's marked "Meco" and "N-1" so should be a welding tip, but it has those radial slots around the central hole in the tip. The problem could be two fold - 1) The tips been cleaned out so many times that it's now more like a N-22) the radial slots are partially clogged and unlike a hole are impossible to clean out. Reply:If you need a new tip you should be able to get one here and answer your first question:http://www.tinmantech.com/html/all_m...lated.php#acet
Reply:I think you may have an original meco natural gas/lp tip. Kents tips are the old design, just not advertized as such.
Reply:You have described a propane tip, also available from KW. |
