I have 2 inverter stick welders!A fronius transpocket 1500 which has an ocv of 92, And I have a kurthriber kitin 170 with an ocv of 88.Does ocv affect how 6010 is run on a machine? How does ocv effect the running of the machine! Is there better arc quality with higher ocv???
Reply:Hello paddypower, generally the higher OCV aids in the starting of the arc. There can be other  issues at work to help that out though as well. Hot start features on some machines are also used to help with arc starting. The hot start feature usually incorporates some form of percentage of over-amperage as well as length of time for initiation of the start of the arc(ease of start). Hope that makes sense. I am sure others will chime in here with various versions and explanations. Best regards, Allanaevald
Reply:This Kaye explaining OCV, she is talking about the SA200 Lincoln, but...OCV is open circuit voltage. When You have a puddle, You are measuring arc voltage. You don't have both at the same time, so the wise *** answer is no, the OCV doesn't affect the puddle, because what You are measuribng isn't OCV. The answer You are looking for is YES You will get different arc characteristics if You change the OCV, because it will have some effect on the arc voltage.I took this from more content, if you want to read it all look on pg.3 in the SA200 Sticky in my post with all of the links.Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.                                         -Cree Indian ProverbSA 200 LincolnVictor Torches
Reply:6010 likes high voltage; voltage is pressure, amperage is volume for lack of better terms. High voltage at the same amperage gives you your dig and pushes the arc in there, low voltage at the same amperage wets in nice and is a gentle arc, more for 7018, etc....Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:On the old DC generator/transformer type welders, the OCV used to have an interaction with the slope of the VA curve.  You could adjust so as to get more constant current or a more reactive current response based on arc length.  With inverters, who knows?  Their VA curves look more like a nightmare.Edit:  Tozzi, my old Lincoln book describes it just the opposite. Reply:Interesting, I must have read it wrong. I know how to make my machine do what I want it to do, putting it in to words is another thing.....Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:Tozzi, I agree.  And old transformer behavior vs. inverter stuff makes any kind of comparison difficult.  It is interesting that "constant current' maybe isn't so constant after all.  It's all about welder skill."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
Reply:Hello Paddypower, I re-read your question and from what I believe that you are asking, OCV only affects the "start" of the rod and it's ability to "light off", from there on out it's a loose cannon. I term it that way based on the host of responses provided by others. Machine slope and all of the variations of it that are related to machine type and available features will have large impacts on arc characteristics, arc response times, and a lot of other details that will determine how well a particular power source will weld with a particular rod, how manageable the arc is, how easily it loses the arc, how well it can penetrate or bridge gaps, etc. Just a bit more of a take on this from my perspective. Best regards, Allanaevald
