Hello I am very new to welding. I purchased a lincoln electric 140 mig welder. I have been playing around with it welding on 12ga steel. The chart on the side door says to use a wire feed setting of 1.5, so thats what I set it at. The problem I am having is when trying to make a weld at the setting it is not consistent ( it kinda starts and stops) so it wont make a good weld. If I use setting 1 it works great. But anything above 1 and I get the same results. I am using .035 innershield. What am I doing wrong? Thanks for any help JeffEdit: I have also played with the wire feed tension. ( loosened it and tried tightening it) and get the same resultsLast edited by comgle64; 01-01-2011 at 04:28 PM.
Reply:The charts are just a suggested starting point, use what works best.
Reply:Make sure you are on electrode negative for innershield wire.
Reply:I am on electrode negative. Could it be my technique. I just want to make sure there is nothing wrong with the welder.
Reply:Likely a technique problem. Welding is hard. Keep trying. Listen to the sound as you weld, it should make a nice consistent "bacon frying" sound. Your settings may vary from the chart depending on the particular situation. Good luck. If you post pictures, you will get specific advice.
