looking for Welding Project Ideas for College

Hi,Just wondering if anyone could give me any ideas on a welding project for college.The tutor is looking for me to test welding strength using different principles, however I am not permitted to use the tensile test.Bit stuck on this one, any help would be greatly appriciated.Thanks.
Reply:Here is what I would, and something I have wanted to test... Make squares out of a given tube. Lets say 2"x2" 1/8" wall. 45 degree miters and make a box that is 12"x12". Weld it with stick, mig, tig, maybe use a few different rods and fillers. Then test them in bending, constraining the bottom of the square and load the top corner and see how much force it takes to bend them a given distance/degrees or until a weld breaks.I have been wanting to test this, but with different gaps in the fit up to test how important good fitting is to a strong structure.
Reply:Could always go with a charpy V notch test and test at different temps. Give you a chance to play with liquid nitrogen and super cool some of the samples.My other thought would be to do a cantilevered moment connection of a given length of weld, say 1" and then load the end of the arm until failure with a press..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:See if your library has a copy of API 1104, there are some real world test proceedures in there that don't require a tensile test machine.

Reply:Hi Im defiantly not looking for any1 to do any research for me but just for previous or past experience!! As Im fairly new to the welding game that's why i was looking for pics to get a visual representation of  what people are talking about!!With all due respect try understand from my point of view as you once were in my shoes to!

Reply:Tackit. I think the OP is looking for projects to test weld strength not simply projects. I guess you could use that to do Vulcan battle sequences in the dorm halls, but the guy with the weaker welds might have a few issues with the testing procedures. .No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size.
