Hey everyone. So I've just brought home another welding table. It needs to be on wheels so I can store it out of the way when not in use.So I combined an item from a misspent youth and something Archimedes taught me.Enjoy.[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOEqiUkN1PQ&feature=youtube_gdata"]Video[/ame]The height of the receiver is standardized around my shop as I use the same lever to move my tablesaw (800lbs), bandsaw (900lbs) and another workbench.Hope this helps someone.Tyler www.killstressdesigns.com

Reply:Way cool Tyler, thanks for the video of how it works!  I just built one for my jointer and it was way more complicated.... I love how you used the skateboard wheels, didn't think they could handle the load. Are you able to make tight turns with the table?AC-180 Lincolnwelder circa '50's
Reply:I like it, very well thought out and simple.Mechanical Engineer
Reply:Thanks guys!@ chopnhack I can make pretty tight turns with it as the receiver is far enough out that I can turn the lever up to 90 degrees left and right. Kind of like backing up a trailer.  The wheels and bearings are strong enough to withstand launching yourself off sets of stairs on a skateboard which is quite a shock load I imagine    Glad you like it!BestTylerwww.killstressdesigns.com
Reply:Are the wheels (that are mounted to the table) just above the floor so that when the table is tilted they support the opposite side of the table??Lincoln pro mig 180Lincoln Square Wave Tig 300/wp 20/home built water cooler Victor, Purox, Harris, O/A welding/cutting setupsVintage Craftsman drill pressVintage Craftsman/Atlas 12"x 36'' lathe7''x 12'' w/c band saw Everlast 140 st
Reply:Very smart.  I personally don't like permanently-castered benches, since they wander when you pound on them.  But that gives you the best of both worlds. You got a pretty good price on that table.  I thought about bidding on it even though I do not have the room for it at all.Jack OlsenMy garage website
Reply:@ DemonSpeederWhen I welded on the wheel mounts I shimmed the table base up a 1/16th" off the floor. After removing the shims the wheels and base are sharing the weight, tip the table just a little bit and you're rolling.@ Jack OlsenThanks!  I share your dislike of chasing your table around And yeah I was pleased on the closing price. I don't feel comfortable bidding on the machines they list but tables and such are a deal if you can pick them up yourself.BestTylerwww.killstressdesigns.com
Reply:Great idea Tyler, wheels I have seen used before, but never the board. Like the hinge out concept. That is awesome! See a Bug on your shirt in video, you a member of IATSE? Local 357 myself, building scenery for days!Mark
Reply:Tyler:Can you post some still close ups of the receiver and the handle and how the connect together. It's a little hard to see the details in the video.Thanks.Sign on East Texas payphone: Calls to God 40 cents......it's a local call...
Reply:I applaud your ingenuity! Great idea, inexpensive to implement, and very functional, making use of all the skateboard parts. If this were a reality show of ideas... I'd send you on to next week's show. Lincoln Idealarc 250 (circa 1962)Lincoln Weldpak 155 w/Mig KitLincoln Squarewave TIG 175

Reply:Slick-Trick tsmutz5... simple but super effective!  Like Stampeder said, some close up pictures of the receiver and the table wheel mounts would be useful.  I'm impressed with your elegant soultion to a long standing problem.  Good One!Rick V 1 Airco Heliwelder 3A/DDR3 CTC 70/90 amp Stick/Tig Inverters in Parallel1 Lincoln MIG PAK 151 Oxy-Acet
Reply:Kickass method! Thanks for posting it.I'd extend the handle because humans shouldn't bend over when working (even when we are young and feel healthy!) since it stresses the spine. That would make a great backsaver even better.
Reply:Thanks for the kind words everyone.@ mammaogiYes I've been IATSE since 2000.  I was a rigger for Broadway shows for years before I started my business. Now I fly out and do little short term gigs from time to time. Here are some close up pictures.I just finished a project that used a bunch of 2"x 2" x11ga tubing so you'll notice the extensive use of those cut offs http://www.flickr.com/photos/killstr...7628128539798/Best Tylerwww.killstressdesigns.com Attached ImagesLast edited by tsmutz5; 11-14-2011 at 03:37 PM.Reason: pictures

Reply:Amazing K.I.S.S design! I seen similar but bigger model done to move camping trailer but never one like yours for moving stuff arround the shop, very smart and well done job! I'm just a bit concern about those "Gumby" wheels but retrofit them with metal roller is no big deal if they colapse. Time will tell!  Big thump up for this idea sir! Reply:Cool closeups! Did you have to weld the nut as a spacer on the receiver side to keep the right height to pivot? Did you work that out by trial and error or where you able to figure it out beforehand?AC-180 Lincolnwelder circa '50's
Reply:Tyler:Thanks a lot for the close ups. I have a new table that I will be building shortly with a 1 inch top and I will be using your method (hope you don't mind?).It is the perfect solution for my concern about moving it and not putting it on casters. Thanks again for posting and great enginuity.Glenn.,Sign on East Texas payphone: Calls to God 40 cents......it's a local call...
Reply:@ StampederGlad that this can help you out!  good luck with it.I'd like to see some pics of your version when you finish it.Maybe we can post the adaptations in this thread? @ chopnhackThe nut is just a quick and dirty way for me to move the lever a little farther from the frame for a tighter turning radius. The whole thing was eyeball engineered using cut offs, so if I was using virgin material there are some things that could be done differently but you can't beat the price of using cut offs! BestTyler

Reply:Cool stuff.  That's similar to how they jack up Formula One cars.
