Prices of mig wire and tig filler rod seem to vary a lot from place to place. Is there really much difference in grade? I mean er70s6 should have the same strenght but what else is different?2 invision 456 mp, 456 pheonix, 3 hypertherm 1250, Hypertherm 45,Dynasty 200dx, Millermatic 210 w/ spoolgun, Bobcat 250, 12vs extreme, slugger dry cut saw, slugger mag drill, O/A rig, Piles of tools
Reply:As long as you get test reports/certs/msds, with traceability, you should be fine. If not, you can't be sure.Any reputable supplier can provide these documents. Everything I do requires traceability on the materials. I keep the documents with the material.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.
Reply:Differences between different ER70S-6 come from things like consistency of diameter, consistency of cast and helix in spooling, amount and quality of lube on the wire surface, cleanliness of the steel used to make the wire. Most of these affect how well the wire will feed, which in turn will impact how easy the wire is to weld with. Using quality steel, with the lowest amount of contaminants(primarily phosphorus and sulfur), improves the strength and toughness of the weld and reduces the likelihood of hot cracking.Even the low-buck wire manufacturer's can produce a high quality wire. The real issue is consistency; can they do it with every batch of wire made? Can you rely on the wire to produce consistent results every single time you strike an arc? For a hobby welder this probably doesn't matter. To a manufacturing company that's using thousands of pounds of wire per month; it can make or break the quality of their finished product; and have a big influence just how profitable the company is.Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector
Reply:Ok thanks. I bought a roll of htp er70-s6 with free shipping for a third of what airgas was selling their hobart stuff. Anyone know about htps consistency? I am a professional welder, but probably not be using more than 30 lbs of wire in a month anytime soon.Last edited by 96708; 06-27-2013 at 05:28 PM.2 invision 456 mp, 456 pheonix, 3 hypertherm 1250, Hypertherm 45,Dynasty 200dx, Millermatic 210 w/ spoolgun, Bobcat 250, 12vs extreme, slugger dry cut saw, slugger mag drill, O/A rig, Piles of tools
