Got another P&H bucket . it needs a new floor. The floor starts as 1.5 inch steel when it got to us it was worn to about .125 . A few shots showing the floor sub structure exposed. A large portion will be replaced as it is not in the best shape. Attached Images

Reply:ha yeah the place is overrun with dogs. Almost equal to employees. we dont have a large staff 8 guys and 3 dogs.. Its hard to get GTG welders here. we work lots of hours to keep a complete rebuild of bucket door and bale to around 6 weeks. We need 1 or 2 more guys. And yes that is a 994 cat loader bucket. Thanks for the comments any questions or suggestions would be great. I will post pics as things progress
Reply:NIce stuff, thank you.  What size carbon and how many amps?DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:we use 3/8 carbons at about 500. We have an old sae 400 (Grey beast) that puts out about 675 on a load tester. It cuts like a knife through butter with 1/2 carbons. and use 5/16 at 300 to remove bushings to avoid harming the bore itself.
Reply:How much air does it take to effectively utilize 500 amps of  carbon arc?
Reply:Today my son ran 5/32 carbon at 250 amps to remove cutting edges off an 18" bucket and a 72" bucket.   Somewhere around 60 psi.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:as much as your compressor  can push.  We dont reg the air the 3/8 hose can barely carry the volume needed. We run 5 air arcs of a 185 cfm kaiser. I think its set at 160 psi. if i use smaller carbon like 1/4 I will reg the air to about 70 to 80 psi. with smaller carbon you get a cleaner smoother cut with less air. The larger carbon and higher amps will not cut clean but be black and cause porosity in your weld. hope this makes .o2. David what kind of buckets you and your son working on ?

Reply:Awesome projects...Can I ask a few questions, as long as they don't violate trade secrets? On the bucket job, how did you know where the substructure ribs are when you start cutting?  Stud finder density meter for steel?  Measure the other side and take photographs before bucket is laid down?  Drill a through hole, then use bent wire or your finger to find the nearest rib? When you replace the floor on that bucket, will you use small individual pieces with beveled edges, then weld those to the top of the substructure ribs, or use one large plate and fillet weld that to the substructure from the other side? What is a GTG welder?  Good to go?  Have the dogs ever walked onto hot steel by mistake? Nice projects, impressive work, thanks for sharing.Zip.Last edited by zipzit; 11-20-2011 at 06:51 AM.
Reply:zip to answer some of your questions. 1st the ribs were easy to find one was exposed due to the damage I then simply fallowed the fusion line of the weld all the way out with the air arc. the new floor will be welded in strips length ways using the sub floor as a backing strip then when we flip it over we will fillet weld it also. The dogs haven't burnt them selves they are usually sleeping well away from the work. it was the end of the day and they were wanting some attention.. and yes GTG is my own term of good to go. just some one who can weld and gouge  and fallow plans without looking over their shoulder. Expat its a 64 yd 4100 bucket. I like looking at your work. Someday will have that many done
Reply:Thanks, Spec,Here's a couple 4100 dippers I was in on this spring----No that's not ME in the pics, it's one of my guys from Ghana.  I also hung a lip on a 994 CAT, but can't find any pics of that one. Reply:I see stuff like that on my ride to work every day. I drive by one of the largest open pit mines every day. P&H has one of their biggest buckets up here, Pretty amazing seeing a machine that can pick up an entire house in one scoop and a truck that can haul it in less than 1 load. I think some of the new haul trucks are 300-320 ton capacity
