1989-90. Here's another project that's old enough to drink! Except there's six projects in this pic, 5 that had some welding.1. Pool. 4'd x 18' Doughboy above ground. Got it for free, dug to 6', bottom drain, full size pool filter and pump with sidewall return. The Jungle Jim http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=62588 post 4 pic 3 lived off the right hand side of the picture.2. Waterfall runs off a 2" branch plumbed off the pump return. Calculated 14" wide slot at 1/4" high would throw a nice "fall". It did. Its valve adjusts from a "shooting out" to a trickle. It's 14x14x14, from 3/16" tempered 6061 aluminum sides and softer 3/16" rolled aluminum curve. TIG'd it with a 300A/BP - full power, adjust down with the pedal. Sanded out with a "brushed" finish. Great project but only lasted a year! It started "sweating" all over, and poking one of the water droplets with a scriber went right thru the aluminum! Looked inside and it appeared to be all "calciumed up" and pitted almost all the way thru the metal. I think the pump might have put a couple volts of ground fault type potential in the water as it passed thru, but I could never detect or measure it. GR8 noob tig project - I know - it was my first!3. Ladder. 1.5"x1/8" aluminum tubing with 1/8" diamond plate bent steps. You can barely see bolts where the tube returns to the deck. These allowed it to pivot up out of the water. Like some boats I've met, it stayed cleaner and lasted longer when it was "high & dry" out of the water.4. Redwood deck 8'x12'x5'h, welded up 1/8" steel framing anchors and brackets instead of the Simpsons.5. 12' gate in the background looks like a fence but it's a 4' man gate and 8' swing gate for the truck. Then I went and built the pool & deck in front of it! 1x6x6' redwood slats screwed to a 2x2x1/8 sq tube frame behind it. Can probably visit and get pics if anyone's interested.6. The shop building across the alley 16' behind the gate was originally a carport. Then one week we poured footings for and welded up base/caps on pipe columns and web stiffeners on the W12x14 ridge beam. Then on a Friday morning two of us [full time and half a dozen other "stop by / do something then leave" friends] started building it, and by sunset Sunday, were laying the ridge tiles on the roof! Wired it and finished the insides over the next week. Turned into a great shop - Miller 35 MIG, 300A/BP TIG, Linde plasma cutter, Victor torch, 7x12 drop saw, Rockwell 14" upright bandsaw, drill press, roller, (2) 4x4x1/2" steel tables, even an import milling machine! All gone now.Back in those day's I don't think I ever bought any material! It was all scrap and drops from friend's shops! Thanks for lookin! Attached Images
Reply:Do you think the damage is caused by the chlorine and whatever other chemicals that's in the water? The steps might fare better since the water around it isn't really "moving" while the water fall is constantly being battered by water that's full of chemicals?awesome waterfall, by the way. |
