I am looking to get a welder. I used to have a millermatic 130 xp but it vanished... I found a Hobart Handler 135 for around 400 with a tank and cart. Is this a good machine or should I get a 140 from toolking.com refurbed?? I am using this machine to weld my meyers plow and other misc items, I am not a welder by trade.

Reply:I was told years ago hobart and miller were made by the same company or one owns the other. Anyone know this?
Reply:Hobart welders are made by miller. You can usually find a miller equivalent of the hobart machine. They are very good machines. I look at Hobart as the entry level division of miller as most of the big box stores and fleet supply stores carry them.

Reply:A tank is about $100, so you'd be paying $300 for a 110V Hobart MIG. The 135 and 140 have identical specs, the difference is decals and marketing BS. They're all 90 amp MIG welders at about 20% duty cycle. Very good on metals up to about 10 gauge. If you want to weld 3/16" or 1/4" steel, you should consider a 220V MIG.that's my opinion, worth at least what you paid for it .. :-)
