choosing wire

My welding buddy uses .030 wire exclusively.Im looking to weld some 18 guage floor pans and figured .023 wire would use less heat to prevent warping.Any help appreciated.1971 Pontiac Lemans Olds 3501973 Buick Centurion Ragtop 4551974 Chevy El Camino Classic 3501976 Pontiac Trans Am 4551997 Honda Valkyrie 6 cylinders,6 carbs.
Reply:I do it with 035 all the time and yes you would need less power to run smaller wire ESAB makes a wire called easy grind for body work and i think it is 030 or 023that is a low power wire for sheet metalBut you still need to tack up properly and weld a bit in one place the go to the opposite side and weld a bit and just keep doing that short weld and be aware of your heat inputhttp://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=190231everything i have done is 035 wire but on my portable i use 75/25 shield gasBacked my CATMA over your CARMA oops clusmy me  What would SATAN do ?? Reply:This is the wrong place to ask for help and when you get answers, you tell these guys you don't give a crap.  Use pop rivits.

Reply:Always first is to match everything to the base metal your welding...wire...heat input ..and warp considerations when doing sheet metal and thing like thatBase metal always first.... matching the filler metal to it and the input to weld with it next..you can always use smaller or larger filler as the situation dictates..where and how long you weld in certain places is what makes a welder out of you knowing were and how much heat to get the results you want and not mess things up warping it ...good fit up... good tack up ...stitch weld or just burn itIt all depends on what your base metal is and joint configurationBacked my CATMA over your CARMA oops clusmy me  What would SATAN do ??
