I picked these up for what I thought was cheap at Lowes.  However now that I've run some of them they just don't seem to be working for me.  Slag is nearly impossible to remove even with a grinder.  Trying to figure out the whole whip technique but can't even get a good look of what the bead looks like.Is this normal?  Try a different 6011 or learn to weld??
Reply:What are you running your settings at, what kind of machine are you using, and what are ya welding? I use the fleet weld 180s 6011 1/8 inch I usually run them around 90 to 100 amps, They weld pretty good they do splatter alot and leave a good bit to chip off behind them. They are awesome if you are welding on dirty metal, painted, or rusty farm equipment. I usually make a C movement with them and have a pretty decent bead with them. It takes alittle bit to get used to them verses a drag rod like a 7018.Vantage 300 kubota ,miller 304 xmt ,lincoln ln 25 pro , ranger 305 G, plenty of other tools of the trade to make the sparks fly.
Reply:Maxstar Was running between 50 and 90 very flat bead,  also a very violent rod so I'm sure they would be better for cutting through rust, paint etc but on clean stock the slag is still sticking awfully.
Reply:Not really a rod I would recommend for clean metal that you want to have a nice looking roll of nickels on. 7018 is the rod for that the 6011 is a min prep deep penetration rod.Vantage 300 kubota ,miller 304 xmt ,lincoln ln 25 pro , ranger 305 G, plenty of other tools of the trade to make the sparks fly.
Reply:Not purty but useful. Try running them hot so they don't stick and backing down until they behave. We start our students on 6010. 6011 is similar to 6010 and I use it a lot at home. Run enough of it and you'll figure it out, and it will serve you well.
Reply:Just very curious if this is typical of 6011 or just the fleetwood line.  The only other 6011 I've run were harbor freight and they had a totally different feel approach bead
Reply:The Maxstar is your problem...I had a 140, wouldnt run 6010, or 6011 for ****... Shop has 2 150 in cases, they dont burn 6010, or 6011 for ****. They sure burn 7018 nice though... We think its the Inverter welder in general, that wont run the cellulose rod. Arc goes out.Ive had marginal success with 6011 with the Maxstar burning in a root pass for pipe.Lincoln Power MIG 210 MP ( boat anchor )Lincoln Weld-Pac 100 HDHobart IronMan 230Cutmaster 42Jackson NexGenSumner Ultra ClampsDWM120
Reply:That might be my experience because my 7018 beads look like I've been doing this a long while, whereas my 6011 just ain't working.  However I've heard some people say that a particular rod didn't run well and tried something else with more success so was just seeing if there was something else I could do to make things better.
Reply:6010-6011 can be frustrating.. and it can also look real good..i make small circles as i travle, it seems to work smoother for me than what is called whipping.. a linear back and forth inand out of the puddle..fleetweld is a good product..after running a bead the crust looks like dark grey crisp bubbles..a few hits witha hand brush will remove most of it except the wagon tracks on the sides..dig them out with a pick or a special file...
