I am still browsing around for a wire feeder and have heard quite a bit on the xmt304's as being a great versitle machine expecially paired with a feeder. I came across the Red D Arc website and see they have the 304's with a feeder http://www.red-d-arc.com/category_pa..._category_id=8, and their version of the 304 http://www.red-d-arc.com/category_pa..._category_id=5. Has anybody purchased one of their used units. I am just looking at all of my options and was wondering about the quality and what may have been done to them. Their version looks exactly like a 304 but they call it an extreme duty version, what are the differences and does it still take miller parts? Knowing they are rental units, they probably were run hard and with my luck would break just after the warranty period so what are your opinions?TOO MANY TOOLS & NO MORE SPACE
Reply:I didn't click the link...But all the red d arcs I've seen are something 360s, so I think they are actually xmt 350sCould be wrong, as I haven't paid a lot of attention to them. There is someone on this board who bought one off eBay, and I think he like it.Maybe he will chime in.
Reply:I did. I took my chances, it seems to work ok, though I have not run all of the features. Mainly I stick with it, and if I ever get a gun for my feeder, I may try running wire, although I did use my spoolgun a few times with it.Yes, it came from Red-D-Arc via E-bay. The prices seem lower then when I bought in.Your results may vary of course.(Yes, I still have no gun.) City of L.A. Reply:I appreciate the responses,I guess there is a risk with buying a rantal machine. In tanglediver's case his worked out good. At one of the places I worked, we had a bobcat engine drive that was purchased from a rental company and it ran for a little bit and then would not output in the higher amperage ranges. Unfortunately there is not many used welding machines in good condition in my area everybody seems to have the little 110 migs for sale. My other limiting factors are power and space. I guess my search will continue.TOO MANY TOOLS & NO MORE SPACE
Reply:Chris, aside from your limiting factors, what are your requirements? You say your local selection is sparse, but you might still try c/l in nearby major cities. Some sellers will ship, and it's not that hard to set up. I sent a 350# welder from OR to AR as the buyer couldn't find what he wanted locally. Assuming you want to buy used (I need to, $$$).I opened your thread due to the Red-D-Arc name. My first engine drive was a Red-D-Arc ZR8, aka a Lincoln Ranger 8. Ran like a top, really hated to sell it. But, to my knowledge, all RDA's are rental units initially. I guess you take your chances.Lincoln SA 200Esab Caddy 160Thermal Arc 201TSMiller Dialarc HFI don't like making plans for the day because then the word "premeditated" gets thrown around the courtroom....

Reply:No offense, but nearly everyone who wants you to ship an item off Craigslist is scamming. Give it a try, but don't be surprised if people say no.Everlast PA160-STH... and that's about it!
Reply:My old boss has one. I'm pretty much the only one that has used it in a lot of years. Anyway, I only used it to stick and air arc. I had no problems with it at all, so far."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:I am in the process of having the electrician find out if I have enough extra power to run the xmt304. Hopefully there is and I'll be getting a nice unit, but it will however need a feeder.TOO MANY TOOLS & NO MORE SPACE
Reply:There is enough extra power for me to run the xmt. I'll probably be going up to Jacksonville next week to try it under power. It is at the Red D Arc facility and they told me it could be tested. Aside from the common things like making sure the display and knobs work what are some other things to look at on this machine? It will probably only have stick leads but hopefully they can hook up a feeder for me to test it. The unit is serial number LG390774A which the manual says 2005. Are parts still readily available for this mahine?I've been told that this is way too much power for home hobby use by my parents and the electrician and that I should have looked into a new mm211 or a new Thermal Arc 252I for the price that this will end up costing set up for wire feed, not to mention the new wiring, water cooled tig setup and leads. What do you guys think, did I go way overkill?TOO MANY TOOLS & NO MORE SPACE
Reply:Chris, seriously. You've got a lathe. There's no such thing as "overkill" now When testing, make sure to run the machine through all it's paces. weld on lowest and highest setting and a few in between, work the knobs slowly and watch the leds. Then when you're all said and done, look the salesman square in the eye, and tell him, "yea, I just want this for all the carbon arc gouging I have to do" and note his reactionHopefully Steve/7a will chime in, he knows more about this than I do.Lincoln SA 200Esab Caddy 160Thermal Arc 201TSMiller Dialarc HFI don't like making plans for the day because then the word "premeditated" gets thrown around the courtroom....
Reply:dubl_t,Thanks for the info. I could just imagine what they would say about using that machine for CAG. 7a749 has chimed in because I've been wondering if this unit would be a good decision or just go with a new TA252i. Everybody has been very helpful in giving me various pro's & con's and I just hope I don't make a bad decision.TOO MANY TOOLS & NO MORE SPACE

Reply:I went to Jacksonville Friday to pick up my XMT304. The original price was a little high but I ended up getting it for a bit less and also got 150' 2/0 welding lead, ground and Lenco stinger, new Profax 26 tig torch and 14-pin foot pedal. The 2 employees that were at that location were extremely helpful and knowledgable. They took the time to load bank the machine (he ran it up to 375A), run through all the controls and swap the scratched cover for a better one. I would definately do business with them again. I have been sitting here wanting to use it so bad but it will be about 2 weeks before I get my 50A service put in so guess I'll have to start on my cart for it.TOO MANY TOOLS & NO MORE SPACE
