im looking at hougan904 mag drill i was i was told by a salesman at a LWS that there are some brands that you to use their brand cutters so anyone know what that all about??
Reply:Hello rodney9043, for the most part, an annular cutter is an annular cutter. That being said there are certainly many different varieties of annular cutters with different grinds, different alloys that they are made from, different numbers of contact "teeth", the ability/or not to drill through multiple plates, etc. I believe his statements might be more sales pitch than fact. If the cutter fits into the mag drill as it should and it is turning at the correct rpm, it will likely work regardless of machine manufacturer. That's my take, others may differ and if that is the case I will be interested to be enlightened as to why. Good luck and best regards, Allanaevald
Reply:hey thanks.just wanting to feed back from some experience people on here i know i have see them in the price range 300 to 4,000 the one im looking at is bout 750 or so a hougan model 904, good tools make life easier... cheep tools just piss me off. lol thanks for reply.
Reply:Hello again rodney9043, I believe that I may have mis-interpreted your initial post. I thought that you were referring to cutters and not so much machines. I can tell you that a Hougen is at the upper end of the scale in quality, reputation, and performance among the domestically available units. There are a ton of others that rank similarly or better than, yet price often goes hand-in-hand when you consider the quality and performance. Those upper-end units often have auto-feed features, auto-lubrication features, variable cutter speed adjustment, possibly a magnet-saver feature(this is where the initial magnetic force is reduced until the drill portion of the machine is actually turned on), this prevents magnet burn-out from leaving it engaged for overly long periods of time or possibly forgetting to turn it off. Some have really large capacities which the general user really doesn't need. The main thing to consider when you are looking for such a unit is one: access to service and parts, can you get it warranted, or serviced locally if you require the need? Two: Does it have a decent track record for reliability and ease of use, in other words, are the controls laid out well and easily recognized, can adjustments and bit changes be accomplished readily? And three: does the price justify the amount that you will use the tool, if you seldom use this piece of equipment would a rental be a better way to address your needs? These are just a few considerations for you to think about while you are contemplating this sort of purchase. Good luck and best regards, Allanaevald
Reply:@ rodney943 - that Hougen is sweet. Go Michigan! You do not have to use Hougen annular cutters because you are using a Hougen drill. Challenge your LWS and explore open-source literature on the subject. Be advised that for maximum transverse/rotational stability (think: safety during ) drilling, you will need your Hougen to be positioned/affixed on 1/2" thickness steel. FTR, currently using a Jancy Slugger Holemake II Magnetic Drill with a few non-Jancy annular cutters. No problema. Reply:I was wondering if I might be able to safely tap the inside of the end that attaches to the drill so that I could put the annular cutter in a jacob's chuck. The reason is because the adapters with set screws are very expensive, not that the annular cutters are cheap -- i spent 400 or so on a 9 piece milwaukee set. Thanks for any feedback in advance

Reply:Yeah, but on a milwaukee super hawg drill. I know it has the power because it has a 13 amp motor and I've seen guys use it to put 6 inch holes in oak without slowing down.
Reply:Milwaukee only uses their cutters and they are expensive , Nitto Koieke uses their own quick change cutters but you can use std Weldon shank cutters too . They sell adapters to turn them in all machine tools . Just bought 2 new Jancys that Fein owns them and they are all changed around , don't know how they will work out ??? I would buy a Hougan with the new swivel base if I had to do side drilling . A auto feed will save cutters .
Reply:What I was wondering is if I can take an enormous hand-held drill (the milwaukee super hole hawg) which has only a 1/2" jacob's chuck, and place a threaded rod in the chuck and tap the inside of an annular cutter (1/4" drill barely fits in the cutter) and use this rig safely without spending 125 dollars on such an adapter.
