Okay guys, I am 17 and in welding trade school full timecurrently I am doing v groove butt joints, about 3/8" plate, beveled 45 degrees on track torch and grinding about a 1/8" landing on each pieceI am using e6010 electrode, 1/8" rod diameter, and about 75 amps on a miller syncrowave welderthe first initial weld I can make beautiful all day long, nice and even penetration through the back, my problem is filling the dang thing after words.before this project weld I had to do vertical t joint uphill 3 pass welds with same setup, I had an extremely hard time and it took me a while before I had something nice to turn into my instructor which I got graded a 97% on which I was very happy about.back to my problem, so I do my first weld fusing the two plates together which like I said I can do all day long and make them nice a pretty, problem is filling them, I try to do only two welds after my first to fill them, and they would actually turn out nice but I keep getting really bad slag inclusions on the final weld and it looks terrible if the inclusions were not there it would sit flush with the face of the plates and I could turn it in.can you guys please give me some tips on how I can combat this now and in the future, I want to be a full time welder not sure where though, I was thinking pipefitting union
Reply:With what you described it sounds like you need to tighten up your weave. The slag inclusions are between the weaves?Leo
Reply:I'm not doing a weave motion to fill v groove, just 6010 beads, but yes the inclusions seem to be towards where the two beads join in the center
Reply:With or without backing strip?I'll post more after responce.1981 Lincoln SA 200Miller Trailblazer 302gMiller 211 Mig Welder w/ AutosetI'm learning to stick metal together
Reply:Why are you filling the whole thing in with 6010?  If you can run the root in well, theres no point in more practice with 6010.  Its not meant to fill in joints like that, no where near as fluid as18 wire.Run the root with 6010, fill the rest up with 7018.Have we all gone mad?

Reply:Heat is far too high.Try around 65, then 60.May need to go lower depending on fitup.Running the temp. Lower allows the puddle to cool and build up.Sometimes I run it around 55 if the fitup is bad.Push the rod deep into the weld pool. The majority of the sparks should shoot through the backside. It will have a distinct sound when you get it right.LISTEN to the metal. It'll sound like hot *** bacon frying in a pan full of grease.Learning that sound is key.Make sure as you make your circles up the groove touch/ carve both walls out.All for now, on the iPhone. I'll post more later.1981 Lincoln SA 200Miller Trailblazer 302gMiller 211 Mig Welder w/ AutosetI'm learning to stick metal together

Reply:also I do the circle motion your talking about
Reply:If it is a 3 vert. stringer cap you may need to lay the 2nd one more onto the first and the same with the final pass. Also you may have to put more into your fill pass.Leo
Reply:I know where youre coming from, we were doing the same thing at my school (Also all with 6010, who knows why) and i always wire brushed the crap out of mine, and then used an air grinder with a wire wheel attachment to make sure that every speck of slag was off of there. Good luck!![Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. See you on YouTube! -ChuckE2009
Reply:For giggles, what code are you welding towards?Likely ASME section IX?I welded out plate:Root pass 1/8th 6010 5+Hot pass 3/32nd 7018Cap 3/32nd 7018So, you are struggling to run out or complete Root pass 6010Hot 6010Etc.... 6010?????I've not seen it done like that. That's why I asked what the code is on it?In terms of reducing inclusions and slag where applicable smoothIt out with a grinder. And follow up with a wire wheel...That's all you can do...1981 Lincoln SA 200Miller Trailblazer 302gMiller 211 Mig Welder w/ AutosetI'm learning to stick metal together
Reply:Tell your instructor you don't appreciate your time being wasted. I guess just make the best of it then.  I would run it hot and use a nice oval motion, so that the longer axis is perpendicular to the travel direction.Have we all gone mad?

Reply:it is surprising to hear that you have mastered keyholing and penetration and are having issues with a fillpass.....fotos would help....

Reply:From the sounds of it, you are being "greedy". That means you are trying to put to much fill in at one time.If you are running the root pass in fine, continue the subsequent passes in the same manner. With 3/8" plate beveled at 45 degrees and a 3/32" root gap, you will end up with an opening at the top of the groove of just a little over 3/4", and you are NOT going to fill that in a 2 pass.A 3/4" top groove will likely take 3 or 4 beads for the final cover pass.Again, dont be "greedy", keep running normal stringers the same as your root pass to fill, then cap.
Reply:Your instructors may just want you to master the 6010.30 yrs ago while in ag. college our welding instructors taught us with 6010. Their reasoning was if you could lay a nice cap with it, 7018 would be easy. The 6010 was needed for the root anyhow.Looking back they had a point. 6010 is a lot harder to leave a nice looking weld.Leo
Reply:Originally Posted by hankhillNo backing stripI agree with filling with 7018, however I want to get out of here with a passing grade so what my instructor says goes with no questions askedtells me to fill with the 6010, no idea why but I'm guessing just for more practice with the type of electrodekeep the posts coming and thanks for the help so far
