Good Morning all, I found a O/A kit on Craigslist for $100.00. The O2 bottle has a retest date of 2007 with * and + caveats it is good for another 4 years. I can't find the retest date on the MC bottle but I am going to call Gaspony (the last place to trade the MC out). The Torch that came with it is (what I think) a 3 tube injector cutting torch. What do you think? Attached Images
Reply:Not bad. Down side to that kit is the cylinders are tiny. You won't be doing much cutting with that rig. It's ok for cutting a few bolts or helping to loosen up stuck fasteners, buy you will run into the problem with the with drawl rate almost instantly using the 1/7th rule. My smallest cutting tip can exceed the with drawl rate on my 80 cf cylinder, let alone a 10 cf "MC" cylinder. Kits like that are good for doing small welding with jewelers torches or brazing small things. It's also not quite as simple as just upgrading cylinders either to get more gas. The MC cylinders use a different CGA fitting than the newt size up, the "B" cylinders. These are both different than the other 2 CGA fittings that are typically found on acetylene cylinders larger than that. They do make adapters that will allow you to use that reg on larger size cylinders however. Just remember to keep the adapter when you go to exchange cylinders. If you don't go to use the new one right away you won't realize you screwed yourself. Chances are you'll have to go and buy another adapter... Your O2 reg won't be an issue if you choose to upgrade..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Well if nothing else the regulators and the torch itself is worth 100.  I would get some bigger bottles, unless you need the little one's for little mobile jobs.  Good find!Lincoln Weldanpower AC/DCLincoln LN-25Miller WC-115a Miller Spoolmatic 30aCheck out my youtube TV Channel
Reply:I have a very similar set that I use for small jobs at home. It has Victor regulators and torch components. I paid over $300 new. While it works great, the tanks are very small and need to be refilled often - too often. I am lucky to get 15-20 mins of operating time out of the Acetylene.I love the portability of the set but I thought the tanks would last longer than they do.
Reply:I agree 100% on the cutting time limit issue. I have been getting an Oxy-Propane kit together for cutting and brazing. I jumped at this since I knew I needed to do a some gas fusion welding and I have found out that you do not do that with O/P if you want to weld to hold. I am putting together some things like a new smoker grill and a new small forge and I wanted to be able to do real welding on that not just brazing. Anyone have a guess how long I can safely weld with a #0, #2 or #4 tip without going outside of the 1/7 (or new 1/10-1/15) rule?thanks all.
Reply:By the way I do have a knock off kit with the non-MC regs as well so if I need to get a bigger tank I can but thanks for reminding me. I did not what an MC tank or reg was till I started reading up on it here a few weeks ago.
Reply:Which brand torch?  Tip size numbering is different for different brands. An MC tank is 10 cubic feet. According to one tip chart I have, only the smallest tip would be within the 1/7 rule.  That would be Victor 000, Harris 0 or AIRCO 00."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
Reply:Sorry, forgot about the tip size across the brands, these would be Victor tips.
Reply:I don't have the exact numbers in front of me but basically the small tips that come with these torch kits are already exceeding the 1/7 extraction rule. I was disappointed to learn that when I went shopping for some larger tips. The story that was told to me is that given the short practical operating time of these small O/A kits you can probably get away with exceeding the 1/7 rule using the stock tip.But anything larger is going to be significantly over the 1/7 rule.
Reply:Still kind of fuzzy on that rule. If the 000 and 00 tip use 1-2 psig of Acetylene and the 1/7 rule says no more than 1.43/hr does that mean I can weld for 30 min of useage and then let it rest for 30 min and got back to work? The type of work I am going to be doing is more likely to be weld 10 min and do other things for 20-50 min. Attached Images
Reply:No what you need is a chart that shows gas usage in cf. The link I usually post isn't working for whatever reason right now. I'll try and dig up a different one to post and explain it.http://dennisalbert.com/Welding/WeldingTipGuide.htmIf you look at the chart at the top you will see that the small tip requires 1-2 SCFH or cubic feet per hour. Go up to say a #3 tip and now the tip almost 3-6 SCFH. A 10 cf MC cylinder using the 1/7 rule  would mean you can safely with draw roughly 1.4 CF per hour. In comparison, an 80cf cylinder would allow you to withdraw almost 11.4 cf per hour.... Using an 80 cf cylinder and conservative fuel usage you could run up to a #5 tip and still stay under the 1/7th rule. The small MC cylinder would be borderline even with the smallest welding tip given. If you down to the cutting tip chart you'll see even the smallest one exceeds the withdrawl rate, hence you can only cut for very brief periods or you risk pulling the acetone out of the cylinder. This chart looks to cover Harris tips, so you'd have to cross reference to Victor either with a cross reference chart or based on drill size for the orifice..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Here is the Victor top chart for the  J Series Victor torch handles, I hope that is close enough. So I get that you can not just let it rip for an hour with a #6 tip on my dinky little tank. What I wonder is if you can use a larger than #000 for part of an hour and then let everything settle? Attached Images
Reply:Yes you can. The tough part is determining how long you have to work with a given size before you exhaust the "reserve" capacity in the cylinder since you are drawing out gas faster than the cylinder can allow the acetylene to come out of solution and become a gas.I can't tell you if you have 1/4 cf to work with or what since the idea is that when you use up gas the cylinder has enough time to "replace" what you use with new acetylene that "boils" out of solution..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Oldendum, thanks for the tip (no pun intended). Main thing is that I will need to do just a bit of welding and the rest can be brazing. Thanks again.

Reply:You are correct that the handle in the add is a cutting torch but it also came with the brazing/welding head. I also have a kit with brazing/welding tips if need be. I used it last night and did my first few welds. I got to say that I did not expect to ever see mild steel run like butter. I gots some work to do to get better. I am going to seek out some help at the automotoive skills center here on the Army post where I work as a contractor. They have people there that can help with these types of things.
Reply:Ahha.... now it  makes more sense. Please excuse my assumptions, I thought the discussion was about the pictured set.Disregard my "Harris" comment too, again,  I was referring to the pictured set.Enjoy your new venture
