Reply:Why not just get one of them 500 dollar, ninety mile an hour  welding hoods and just let it do the work for you. Get one with flames on it so no one can tell if you are welding or on fire. I would get a full set of leathers so I could smell like a dead cow before the end of the day. Dont forget to get a rag to tie around your head instead of a good welding cap to keep the sparks out of your ears. They feel so good going down. Thats all I can think of. You will learn what all you need soon enough. Welcome to the life of burns, cuts and smoked up lungs. But I cant think of anything more rewarding to do in life. It is an honest living. God Bless.
Reply:"Chew tobacco, chew tobacco, chew tobacco....spit"Anybody asks you what's the bucket for.....tell them you spit in it!That way they won't be borrowing any of your stuff.
Reply:How about a ball peen hammer or single jack. This could be the most important tool for fit up or metal persuasion.
Reply:I like tig finger, back of hand foil cover ontop gloves... Extra gloves... C clamps, extra lenses... In addition to your listSal
Reply:Well I am going to emphasize something that has been said already. BOOTS!!! I know its hard to do when you are in school but try to get the highest quality boot possible. You are going to be on your feet most of the time on concrete, rocks, mud, grating, ladders ect.. Trust me if you dont have good boots your are gonna feel it. I have gotten to the point I only wear Redwings. Just what works for me.
Reply:i wear cowboy boots roper toe soon as i can afford it im getting some redwings  thanks for all the reply's guys got a good list going now ....... if i could only hit the lotto now lol
Reply:A couple good magnets. We use them for setting grounds on odd sized pipe and the like. Sometimes, a clamp just won't hold. Then again, I weld a lot of aluminum. And magnets don't hold for stink on that, either!!!Wire brushes. Thin. One large, one small. Real helpful.Bastard file. And, a small round file. We use Falltech harnesses, and a few others. Believ it or not, Home Depot has a roofing harness kit with a safety lanyard and harness for a good price. But, if I were you, I would hold out on that. The shops you apply for HAVE to supply them to you. Yes, having your own is a good thing, but save your money where you can.And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.

Reply:For "school" purposes? You don't need much... but it's always good to start building your collection early. Most everything has already been mentioned. The most important is the PPE. Steel toes, obviously, with a leather tongue. I'll say lace up boots because some places won't let you use pull ons. But then again, some places won't let you use lace ups.. but IMO it's not as common.Good safety glasses, good cutting glasses/goggles. 100% cotton shirts... screw leathers. Wrangler is my preference but it's whatever.Welding caps. Many.Knee pads if you have an issue getting under the 6g and 5g welds. Crescent wrench, channel locks, and vice grips.C clamp vice grips.Extra stinger.TIG parts... the ceramic cups will break easily. A short tail or button tail if you're feeling fancy. Collets and collet bodies. Maybe even a second torch body too.Stainless and carbon wire wheels... and an extra grinder so you can grind with one and clean with the other.Spare flints for your striker.Extra wire brush or two.Wrap around.Speed square.Torpedo level.Franklin book... I think it's called Pipefitters and Welders Manual or something. If you want a TIG finger, don't buy Jody's... go to O'Reilly or any auto parts store and buy some spark plug boot insulators. Same exact thing. Usually 10-15$ cheaper.. and if you're lucky they'll come in sets of 4, 6, 8, etc. Idk.. just going off the top of my head. My box is in the car. Probably just repeated what everyone said already.
Reply:Your forgetting the most important tool...a helper
