project blood, sweat and beers... bike motor swap into quad

honda cr500 motor in trx250r frameto be honest, it was my first welding project and im not so hapy with most of the welds so im going to buy an aftermarket racing frame (chromoly) and re-do it once i get a nice tig welder. So it took a year but it was worth it. It is the biggest project i have ever taken on and i did all the work myself except the powdercoating, cylinder machine work and tig welding the silencer to fit. When i think of it i can only name 6 oem stock 250r parts on it. i spent days worth of time researching; hours on end measuring, cutting, welding, and drank a couple kegs worth of.....liquid. i am a die hard 2-stroke rider when it comes to dirt so i wanted a totally custom quad and it had to be faster than all my friends new aluminum framed, fuel injected, light weight, best technology 4-strokes. it is still a steel frame but its all the other things that i wanted. everything fits so close its surprising i got it all in there with all my extra bracing. i tried to keep it as stock looking as possible.let me know what you think. .035 fluxcore wire, northern industrial 135 with the gas option (but not used)-GixxerbobLast edited by gixxerbob; 12-27-2011 at 01:40 AM.

Reply:did you add in a section on that pipe? I wouldn't mess with length or volume on a tuned pipe myself.ps. now you just have to hope your buds don't have a race in reverse gear on you.
Reply:I wouldn't worry about that too much really. He moved it up an inch or so to clear the frame? Run it. I love te 500s. Reply:I think your welds look better than what the factory did! I've encountered some seriously pitiful factory welds on Japanese bikes, but they always seemed to hold. Some years ago, I wanted to do the same thing you did, except I wanted to put the CR500 motor into an ATC250R (three wheeler). Reply:Watch the transmission/clutch, Youll probably not have trouble but the bike parts arent built to push a heavier quad. I have seen gears go boom and clutch baskets come apart.Nice conversion though, looks like it came that way!

Reply:thanks guys. i asked my machinist who specializes in 2-strokes and he said that the pipe modifications wouldnt change much since its not in the cone shaped part of the pipe. the biggest problem with this swap is the vibrations. the 250cc motor it came with from the factory had a counterbalance, the 500cc motor vibrates alot but i had the crank balanced/blueprinted along with the custom motor mounts and other anti-vibe parts so it sohouldnt be a problem.
