Reply:i have an Oxweld 24r and it is a great torch. One thing you need to know is that it does not have regular size hose fittings. You will need to track down the odd size fittings to adapt to a regular hose. Esab has a downloadable manual for this torch which will provide you with all info you will need. The r stands for railroad, as these torches were made specifically for the railroad industry as was the 57r torch. Smiths are regarded highly, but I have no direct experience with them. Either way, do not pay to much, because if you look around you can find used equipment cheap.IAMAW Local 330Airco 300 AC/DC HeliwelderAirco Dip-Pak 200 with Profax spool gunPowr-Kraft AC225Everlast PowerArc 200stBuffalo Forge No.21 drill pressSpeedglas 9100xxAirco, Oxweld, Purox, Victor torchesLincoln Ranger 8

Reply:Size is 41/64-18 as opposed to the standard 9/16-18 fittings. I do not have a part number. Go to the nearest welding supply store with the torch and watch them scratch their heads. That is unless you got a torch that already came with the correct adapters, but my guess is not. What all came with your purchase, can you post pics? Check out Esabna.com, go to the Support tab and look for the download library on the left side. If you go there, you will find the gas aparatus page with info on all the torches by Oxweld and Purox. More info than most people would care to read, but I found tons of good information there.IAMAW Local 330Airco 300 AC/DC HeliwelderAirco Dip-Pak 200 with Profax spool gunPowr-Kraft AC225Everlast PowerArc 200stBuffalo Forge No.21 drill pressSpeedglas 9100xxAirco, Oxweld, Purox, Victor torchesLincoln Ranger 8
Reply:You can also desolder the fittings and replace them (remove the valves first so you don't trash the packings!). W-24R stands for the HANDLE. The ATTACHMENT is the CW-24R.ESAB doesn't list the fittings in their manuals. I'd pick up some B-size fittings with enough metal and have them turned down to fit, then silver solder them in place. Leak test the torch afterwards per the ESAB apparatus repair manual (ARM). It's not really worth the money to pay someone to turn them, but if you have a lathe or a friend with one it would be easy to match diameters of the original fittings (desolder and remove those for measurement).R-models are fine torches, but there is nothing good about the "R" part.I wouldn't pay over 25 bucks for a set unless it was a refurb, and since the R-handles are just an obstacle I'd get a similar W-17/CW-23 combo (which I have and like) instead all things being equal. This set is cheaper than having your own parts refurbed:http://cgi.ebay.com/OXWELD-CW-23-W17...item3f07aac713The combo has a modest forward balance. It's "tip heavy" but comfortable. Lots of tips on Ebay.scuba14c has these for sale in the forum, and I linked the manuals underneath:http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=50897If you don't mind a little soldering you'd be good to go. Maybe ESABREP could get ya some fittings. ---------All Smiths I've ever seen are fine torches. They tend to be expensive on Ebay.I don't pay more than a fraction of new price for used torches or regs. NEW Smiths are surprisingly reasonable.  The nice 179 on Ebay right now is already at 99 bucks, but a NEW SC229 is only 229 with free shipping.Last edited by farmall; 02-26-2011 at 10:37 AM.

Reply:If nothing else touch base with OAoctor here and he can probably get what you need/want.His site is www.regulatortorchrepair.com.No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Here's a pic of the CORRECT installed adapter fittings on a C-57-R.That torch is still up on Ebay and likely won't go over the ten dollar asking price since people prefer pretty torches. You could get the torch (the only thing better then one Oxweld is more of them), convert a short section of welding hose with the standard B fittings on the regulator end, and join it to any standard hose with couplers (pic on right) which are cheap and also useful for things like connecting your hose ends together so you leave nothing open in storage. That way most of your hose will work with your other torches. Attached ImagesLast edited by farmall; 02-26-2011 at 09:31 PM.
Reply:i have a few sets of hoses and i use different torches for different things. i wanted to be able to unscrew the hoses if i choose to use another torch. just want to make it simple as possible. if need be i can have a specific set of hoses for the 24r and unscrew them at the regulator i guess.lincoln weld pak 100 hdlincoln ranger 225gxt ac/dcoxy/acetylenepuroxcw202 victor fc100harris model 85harrismodel 16oxweld w24roxweld w17
Reply:Here is the reason few people want these torches, the fittings are a pain! It really does not have to be complicated though. You don't have to get out your solder or lathe unless that is your preferred method. I have the same torch, and I also run other torches, so I have quick connects on the end of my hoses. I went to the LWS and had them make an adapter. On one end it has 41/64-18 male fittings that attach to the torch, a couple inch section of hose, and then the standard 9/16-18 male hose fittings. There are no hose clamps, it is all crimped fittings. I chose to then place the check valves at the end of this adapter with my quick connects as well. While it does add to the overall weight of the torch, it is really not an issue when in use, it just feels like hose hanging off the end like normal. I have also seen a connecter than threads directly into the torch. It is 41/64-18 male on one end and 9/16-18 male on the other, and accepts standard check valves. This might be hard to track down though. Or you could just get a torch that does not have oddball fittings and skip the headache. Good luck.IAMAW Local 330Airco 300 AC/DC HeliwelderAirco Dip-Pak 200 with Profax spool gunPowr-Kraft AC225Everlast PowerArc 200stBuffalo Forge No.21 drill pressSpeedglas 9100xxAirco, Oxweld, Purox, Victor torchesLincoln Ranger 8
Reply:Clamps of the right type are a plus, not a hassle. You may as well make friends with assembling hoses if you like to weld. It's easy and fast.No need to depend on the LWS for that, and they won't be with you at night or on weekends. The screw clamps are what I prefer. I get them from Airgas and use them on all our TIG/MIG/OA hoses. With OA, clock the screw ends to face each other and they are no bother at all. I assemble and repair many hoses thanks to students damaging them.Ferrules are cool until you need to remove one, then it's a hassle. If you hate screw clamps, try some Oetiker clamps instead. They don't require the Oetiker clamp pincher if you have end nippers or similar, and you can buy them individually at many LWS. If you must have brass ferrules, get a hose repair kit with the Vise-Grip-style crimpers. Lots of parts to work with and you can buy just the parts you need to reload. The splices etc are also handy for repairing car and truck fuel lines. i wanted to be able to unscrew the hoses if i choose to use another torch. just want to make it simple as possible. if need be i can have a specific set of hoses for the 24r and unscrew them at the regulator i guess.
Reply:cool thanks. ill try the 41/64ths to 9/16 if i can find them. if need be ill use one of the suggestions yous have given me. thanks a lot guys.lincoln weld pak 100 hdlincoln ranger 225gxt ac/dcoxy/acetylenepuroxcw202 victor fc100harris model 85harrismodel 16oxweld w24roxweld w17
