Being a Motorcycle guy I see my share of crushed and dinged titanium pipes....Almost all the new jap dirt bikes have TI  head pipes........TI is easy to weld as long as you have good gas coverage inside and out..The biggest problem is the cost of the filler rod........anywhere from 275.00to 300.00 a lb.    with a 10 lb minimum order!!  Miller Dynasty 350Twenty Six HammersThree Crow BarsBig Rock

Reply:HelloWhen welding titanium, try to avoid any heat tint. Welding heat input does not matter, it's a single phase material so no problems with properties.Heat tint = oxidisation = embrittlement of titanium. Anything beyond dark blue could be detrimental. Not an issue for the application you are completing - the weld itself looks good.If you use the largest diameter ceramic, large gas lens you may reduce the heat tint. You can purchase trail shields for GTAW toreches which protect the surrounding TI when welding - these are pricey though...you could make one. You could weld in an argon rich box, but this is not really necessary for this application. I'm sure you purged this weld to ensure the internal side is not oxidised.Cheers
Reply:Dam, at that price for filler rod it would be cheaper to just buy a new pipe.  Most Ti exhausts are pretty reasonable from vendors like Tucker Rocky, or Thumpertalk.  Never had to do that but that would be a strong consideration if I bent my pipe.  My last YZ 2 stroke 250 complete pipe was only like 150.00 and it is nickel or chrome plated.  Loooks sweet , but better yet it moved the power band surge to almost exactly where I wanted it.  The stock pipe just made it too pipey and hard to control.  Moving it down a little and sacrificing some top end over rev was OK. especially in veiw of the tractability I gained over excess wheel spin and noise.BobI'm spending my Kids inheritance, I dont like him that much anyway!!!!!!Enuff tools to do the job, enough sense to use em.Anybody got a spare set of kidneys?  Trade?
Reply:I priced titanium filler at my local shop and was quoted about $87/lb (as I remember) and they'd drop ship me a 1 lb container of it if needed (I had to pay freight). I've not welded titanium, but I was curious one day and asked Randy for a price.KevinHobart Handler 210Tweco Fabricator 181iLincoln Squarewave Tig 175

Reply:If you only have one-two small jobs to do, you can get individual filler rods off of eBay and places like that.  They aren't "cheap", but when you consider the alternative of buying a minimum quantity, they aren't bad either.  I think I recall seeing prices in the $6-10 range per 3' rod.  Don't recall the thickness.www.lindgrensupercars.comMiller Dynasty 350Miller Dynasty 200DX - retiredMiller Millermatic 210Miller Spectrum 3080Miller "Power of Blue" stool  Miller Syncrowave 180SD - retired

Reply:Seems like you're getting a lot of discoloration around the starts and stops on the HAZ. I would recommend running a gas lens with a size 12 ceramic cup, I prefer 1/16 thoriated tungsten but 3/32 would do fine. Always make sure to have a good prep before striking your arc on Ti. If you don't you'll get a great deal of porosity is you will be able to see when the gas bubbles start spitting at you. My technique when adding filler is to ball drop it just makes it a look a whole lot nicer, but dipping will do fine too. Just make sure you keep your torch at your stops while it cools down to prevent the discoloration. The straw looking color is acceptable, wants you get the bluing then it begins to weaken the weld, not probably an issue though if you're not working in aerospace.
