Sometimes when I have a decision to make where I must take into account all kinds of variables it helps me to put them in a spreadsheet.  So in the attached image you will see what I think my options are.  Unfortunately I have to include the Northern Tool option because that's more in my price range then the others.  Of course the specs show why it's so much cheaper, not to mention the build quality.  But I'm still learning so a big investment might not be a good choice until I figure out how much I need these tools.  If I missed anything or any welders please let me know.  I would be happy with a stick welder but it seems like based on my 30 Amps I won't be able to do as much as I can with wire feed/mig welder. Thanks,Matt Attached Images
Reply:Have you considered the Hobart line? Tractor supply and Northern tool carry them. A subsidiary of Miller, they are a major brand and cost less than Miller. I suggest you check them out also.
Reply:How about a Lincoln Pro MIG 180, available on sale at Lowes for $535. through 9/22.  It's the tapped voltage version.  http://www.lowes.com/pd_256723-1703-...der&facetInfo=As for a stick unit by a reputable brand, the ESAB Miniarc 161LTS is about $480. delivered.  Dual voltage and should be pretty good on 30A @ 240."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
Reply:try northerns 220 volt wire feeders they should have something like a 180 amp mig or hobart at tractor supply i would avoid a 115 mig you will out grow it
Reply:I would stay away from Northern tool, Harbor Fright, and such for welders. They really are junk and they don't weld that well when they work at all. You are not doing yourself any favors as a beginner trying to learn on sub-standard equipment. There are several good options if you are on a limited budget. Along with the Hobarts mentioned above, you may also want to look at the Thermal Arc 181i and 211i. They are reasonably priced, and can also do stick and lift-arc TIG.Also, if portability is not required, look at some used roll-around MIGs in your area. A used Millermatic 200 or 210, or Lincoln 215, can often be found for under $1000, sometimes with a tank and other accessories.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
Reply:You will probably use a Mig welder more than any other process that you will own.  Buy one that will get  you where you want to be.  I see quality Mig welders used on Craigslist and eBay all the time for under $700.
Reply:Thank you for the advice, I'd love to NOT get a Northern Tool welder but unfortunately my budget isn't there and there doesn't seem to be that many used machines available here in Canada.  I'll keep my eye out though, I posted about an old Hobart T180 I found for an OK price, the person says it will run on a 30amp circuit no problem at full power.  I'm just not sure, I was hoping to find some docs but no luck so far.Matt
