I've got an interview on Monday for a shipyard in VA building submarines. If accepted, I get to move and attend their "training school" to be nuke certified and some other **** for working on the boats.I'm just wondering what sort of materials are used. I haven't done tig on anything but carbon and stainless so I'm trying to get some time this weekend to brush up on some new alloys.. just don't know what kind to use. Also any tips on welding said alloys would be helpful.
Reply:Not sure if it helps at all since it is a ship yard instead of an airfield, but as a weapons guy on here, I might let you know if you were working around nuclear components, they more often than not involve Beryllium compounds/ alloys of some sort.  HIGHLY TOXIC.  Its used because it doesn't pick up the radiation from a weapon, but causes all sorts of inhalation hazards.  You can pm me for further details if you would like.  Id like to hear what kind of job you would be working.
Reply:I met with the hiring crew a week or so ago and signed the contract. I start at 18 something but at least I get to tig. It's welding pipe on submarines and aircraft carriers for Newport News Shipbuilding. Confined spaces and a bunch of other bull. Every question I asked was met with "we will teach you that when you get here".. so I guess there's really nothing to practice for. I couldn't really tell you anything else. Nothing else I know so far. I am getting fit for a respirator so I imagine I "should" be wearing it while I'm in any questionable settings. I don't really need this thread anymore, but thanks for the reply.

Reply:What code is nuclear to? Must be phenomenal to weld that or is there any leeway?
Reply:NRC has codes, most others should me ASME  but I'm sure the navy has their own in house codes and standards.   Building a nuke reactor isn't something you go off doing on a whim.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
