No steel in this one - sorry. But hey, it's a project at least. My last ever DIY kitchen in a space we use for visitors (and may rent out for short term stays).Just missing the sink - I'm undecided what to get. Needs to be something unobtrusive. And I'm on the lookout for an interesting 1960s stove. For those interested in the nuts and bolts:- Cupboard doors are 19mm hoop pine play stained with Sikkens Cetol HLS in light oak and then finished with Osmo Hardwax Oil.- Benchtops are birch ply out of two 3000 x 1500 sheets (from the US). They're stained and finished with F&W Floorseal (because it's hard wearing) and then buffed for a satin finish.- Shelves in bookshelf are 32mm hoop pine finished as per cupboard doors.- Coloured panels are Dulux wash and wear with Osmo over the top so the finish matches the timber.- Cupboard handles are old fuse holders.- Island bench is from the science labs at a local school - they were tossing them out. There are three units screwed together. Loads of storage. And the drawers are labelled! It will be handy when I find myself in possession of a bunch of volumetric flasks or tuning forks or spherometers. And if someone ever gives me a thermoprobe, I'll know where to stick it. Attached ImagesYeah, I carry.House keys, wallet, some change, usually a newspaper, maybe a pen.

Reply:I'm a big fan of plywood. Got some nice plywood furniture made by a countryman of yours, too - Charles Eames.Yeah, I carry.House keys, wallet, some change, usually a newspaper, maybe a pen.
Reply:I've always wrestled with where to put my volumetric flasks & tuning forks & spherometers. You got lucky and have a place for yours.  You're doing pretty good with this project. I've always liked plywood, more so than sheet rock. It ain't done yet tho. Isn't a kitchen till you get a sink and fridge in there too."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt
Reply:Kind of interesting all the stuff they made out of plywood before plastics became more readily available on the market. I've had a couple of Eames type chairs over the years.Last edited by DSW; 01-16-2012 at 12:11 AM..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:G'day Sandy.Fridge is there - behind a cupboard door. The space gets used for the odd art exhibition and stuff like that so I don't want a sink that's too 'sink like' if you get my drift. I think I've found one.Old 60s electric stoves are hard to find in Sydney. There are plenty in our southern state. Sydney got town gas early so most of the old stoves are gas.Now that it's more or less finished, I'm going to list the space on this website: airbnb.com  It will be empty much of the time so it might as well earn its keep.DSW, that early moulded plywood stuff is great. Pity the Chinese copies are everywhere these days - sort of devalues the original stuff.Yeah, I carry.House keys, wallet, some change, usually a newspaper, maybe a pen.

Reply:It's funny, the Aussi's who rented out house a few years back thought the old 1960's Caloric wall oven was really neat and "retro". Had to finally loose the old gas cooktop that matched. Simply ran out of old parts for it and it wasn't worth the effort to hunt them down vs simply buying a new one. I've still got one spare wall oven that came out of a neighbors place. I scraped the one from my place after we swiped parts to keep the rental one going..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:There are fantastic old electric stoves in the US. Pity they are so heavy. The 50s and 60s stoves over there and here are like the cars of that era. Some parts for those old stoves are still around.Yeah, I carry.House keys, wallet, some change, usually a newspaper, maybe a pen.
Reply:Being country folks we've always been propane cook stoves. Propane cook stove, propane hot water heater. You can still cook when the power is out, and the power is out a lot in bad weather."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt

Reply:If you can find an old electric stove that suits you, even if the parts are obsolete and no longer available, maybe it could be retrofitted with more modern/readily available parts and still maintain the older look. Looks like you have done a good job with this project so far. You can't really say there is no steel in this project. You did use steel screws didn't you? Or did you get a bunch of wooden screws?
Reply:Yeah, metal screws. And a very clever metal bracket that holds up the shelf above the bench. And a great sliding track thing for that huge red door made up from scrap I had in the shed. I like the look of timber and steel together.Yeah, I carry.House keys, wallet, some change, usually a newspaper, maybe a pen.
Reply:Since when does wood have anything to with a "Welding Projects & Pictures" forum  besides someone that uses wood for a welding table????Looks good now you have to come here and do mine over.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:We have a company right here in Tucson that restores the vintage appliances. I went to see their showroom once and was amazed. Very expensive too. They did an Okeefe & Merrit range for an old Victorian home we worked on, along with an old round top Philco fridge. The homeowner was a very young lady and from what I understand was part of the Dupont family.  And yes, they do ship to Austrailia. If you view the gallery you will notice all the restored appliances are sold. They restore them per order. Check it out, amazing restorations.http://antiquevintageappliances.com/Last edited by bigb; 01-16-2012 at 09:53 PM.Miller Challenger 172Miller Thunderbolt AC/DC 225/150Miller Maxstar 150 STLVictor 100CVictor JourneymanOxweld OAHarris O/ASmith O/A little torchNo, that's not my car.
Reply:Yes, there is a staggering amount of great 50s/60s stuff in the US - appliances, furniture, cars etc etc. I went to a VW swap meet over there years ago with my brother-in-law. The number of old VWs was amazing.I'm way too slow, Zap. And that lake of yours would distract me, too. I promise I'll get onto another steel project soon and post it.Yeah, I carry.House keys, wallet, some change, usually a newspaper, maybe a pen.
