Looking for perforated metal

I am looking to build some race mufflers, but am having trouble finding a source for perforated steel sheets.  Does anyone have a good source on this?  I am just looking for a small amount right now so I can make a couple of test mufflers.  Thanks for any help.

Reply:McNichols is another source that will probably be less expensive than McMaster.  I have dealt with them before - I'm sure they have a website but I've always used the catalogs and called in the orders.  Their specialties are expanded metals, grip strut, perforated metals, screen cloth - all of that type of material.

Reply:I've built some mufflers for my bikes and quads.. here is what i used and its cheap can be got at all lowes... i would advise wrapping the tube you make from the mesh with metal screen and pack the tube accordingly. Reply:Not dense enough... for any kind of proper attenuation you want to be in the 40-50% perforation density, that screen is in the 70% range.
Reply:It is for a Limited Street drag car.  We will be making anywhere between 1100 and 1500 horsepower, depending on which engine we decide to use.  We are required to run mufflers, but sound attenuation is not really an issue, as you can only do so much to quieten one of these cars down.  It will be a 4 inch inside diameter with one engine, and 5 inch if we use the other.  We basically just have to pass visual inspection.

Reply:For small amounts of expanded or perforated metal, try Amazon.com.  Yes, Amazon.com.  They have outside vendors for raw materials using Amazon to sell their products.Last time I needed a half sheet of 304 Stainless 11 gauge expanded metal, I ordered it through amazon.com.  Shipping was free and delivery was prompt.  Pricing was the same per sq ft as my local steel supplier.  I shop locally for most everything.  But my local steel supplier didn't have a drop, and I didn't need a whole sheet for the project.  SS expanded metal is too expensive to buy extra material if there's another option.Hope this helps...Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector
