Just looking for some insight on welding with 8018Putting a bid together to modify a mono-pole with some new anchor brackets.Job consists of:Grinding off Galv. where its to be weldedWelding on 4) 1-1/4" plate brackets that are 48" tall (A572 Grade 65 Steel)From what I've been told I will need to preheat to 150 before weldingWaiting to hear from engineer about stick diameter size that is requiresOh and the base of the mono-pole is 3/8".... so I'll be welding 1-1/4" plate to 3/8" plate vertically for 48"Any input or critical info I should put into consideration would be great.Cody WernerFABCONwww.fabconwelds.com
Reply:Well, 8018 welds pretty much like 7018 so technique shouldn't be an issue if you are experienced with lo-hi rods generally. However, A572 is listed as "Columbium-Vanadium high-strength structural steel", and gr.65 is the highest tensile grade, which tells me that weldability may be an issue. Off the top of my head, 150F seems low for pre-heat on 1-1/4" plate but I'll leave that to your engineer.A couple of other points, make sure you remove ALL of the galvanizing for at least 1/2" around the welds. Residual zinc is not going to help the weldability any.I would also be rather strict about the "low hydrogen" thing. If your rods are not from a sealed metal can, they should be properly re-dried and stored before use.I will leave the finer details to those with more experience with that type of steel.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
Reply:You will find 8018 tends to dig more. Other than that its the same business~1987 Lincoln Sa-200~~1978 Miller Big 40~ (restored) ~and everything inbetween~
Reply:FABCONWaiting to hear from engineer about stick diameter size that is requiresWhich engineer: a metallurgist, structural, or the qualifying hand from a Welding Engineering Lab? I post: because in recent memory there was a lot of traffic over whom, could be known as a 'welding' engineer. The new Forum search format proved to difficult to find the threads that I'm speaking of, I'll search as I learn the system [and when its fixed].Who is your Engineer?A metallurgist, he's a chief and mostly concerned with how his recipe turns out - no stick-time, orA typical structural engineer's only stick-time is over the summer betweenuniversity sessions while working his way through school, or The non-degreed welding team that produces, the coupons for lab analysis.Typically this individual is highly skilled, and works in-house perfecting procedures for propriety products - and is closest to a stick.Door #1 & 2 - are going to cite a specification, which may or may not, be detailed to your actual and applied conditions.I prefer weld specifications from 'a Door #3'.  They will be the most knowledgeable and flexible because they are closest to the stick.Opus
Reply:Just weld with E-7018  no need on A 572 for 80 rods see D 1.1for preheat
