Anyone evr go to an AWS meeting?

I'm taking a TIG class at the juco and they've got flyers up for an AWS meeting here in PHX on the 10th.Can't find anything about it on the AWS site.Free to attend, so probably not a scam, unless they lock us in and prod us into the back of a semi to haul us off for organ harvesting (in which case, good luck finding any usable organs in me!)Worst case I figure it's extremely boring and pointless. "Networking" was mentioned in the flyer which is always a red flag..Any one ever go to one of these? Know anything about it?If you fight long enough, you will win. Reply:When i was a student i went to the local AWS chapter meetings always nice restaurants with meeting rooms. Usually once a month and i was student member of AWS Dinners half price and lectures from people in the industry ..learn a lot of things from speakers and other AWS members that attend...a lot of the VICA guys there also My professor was chapter pres ..I even took my daughter to a meeting once...made her write an outline on the lecture that night.....consequences for getting bad grade in english  that semesterSpeaker was from Stoody Go forth and have fun...meet other welders and learn thingsStudent AWS membership is half price of regular membershipBacked my CATMA over your CARMA oops clusmy me  What would SATAN do ?? Reply:CA must be the place for this kind of thing.It was a sales pitch for a books and tests corriculum package no doubt paid for by the numerous L.E. representatives that were there.It got so convoluded, I couldn't follow the money, but I think it goesLincoln : AWS : whoever came up with the SENSE program.It was in a "Phoenix College" (yes the one that's the butt of all of those jokes) Style conference room, a short angry man made the demands. Reply:Chapter meetings, no, but I sit on a few of the AWS subcommittees and attend all of the D1 Code Committee meetings.  For the casual onlooker, doesn't do much good, but even as a "guest", those who deal with the codes a lot in industry can a) learn a lot of the back story behind where requirements originated from, and b) influence the Code and official Interpretations moving forward.  You'd be amazed how many things are NEARLY put out for balloting until someone provides a different perspective as to why its a horrible idea...
