just wondering because idk what i want to get into
Reply:What are you calling "hot work"?  Are you referring to welding service taps, control fittings, tapping tees, sleeves and such on loaded lines, or doing tie-ins on in-service lines with shutoff being controlled by stopples or valves?  Do you have any such experience?  It's not really something that a person just jumps into.  You need to work with a good seasoned welder that knows their **** to learn the do's and don'ts in that line of work...  It's really a part of pipelining.  A good, well rounded pipeline rig hand can do it all.  But it takes time and experience to get there.  I've seen really good bead hands that couldn't cap to save their life...  Firing line hands that couldn't bead... Both that couldn't do tie-ins.  But I've never seen a tie-in hand that couldn't weld out the whole line if need be.  Control fittings, tapping tees, spherical tees, math and fitting are a very big part of tie-ins.  Sometimes tie-ins are simple.  SOMETIMES they can be an absolute nightmare.I don't know what you mean really by which is "better".  You'll be more in demand, and better compensated in proportion to what all you can do.  Good Luck-------------------------Chemetron AC/DC 300 HFSnap-On MM300L Lincoln SP140 Lincoln AC/DC 225g Lincoln SA200 Lincoln SA200 Miller Bobcat 225GVictor torchesH&M and Mathey beveling machinesMcElroy Plastic pipe fusion

Reply:Anything that generates a spark or flame is considered hot work. I.e. grinders. Drills, any power hand tool that has an electric motor. And then the obvious cutting tools with gasses and all welding processes. I think the redneck means hot tapping would be mu guess
Reply:sorry didn't clarify like welding on pressured pipes and vessels
Reply:tanks and stuff
Reply:Most tanks are done with now with robotic welders in shops on giant rollers. Please clarify more on what your goals are so we can help you. Do you want to make 45k a year or 200k+ a year. Do you want a shop job or out in the field. Do you want to singlehand or rig work?
Reply:Where are you in KS? They are starting(ed)(?) on a pipeline that runs from Illinois to Ok. Runs through quite a bit of MO. I think it's called the South Flanagan. IMHO the best thing you can do is get your foot in the door any which way you can and get and get some experience under your belt at the same time. If you have the skill and the will the rest will take care of itself. Pipeliners make good money for a good reason. It's fiercely competitive, extremely critical and often working in crappy conditions. It's not for everybody. Maybe look into boilermakers and pipefitters as well. There's all kinds of welding jobs, pipeliners just get all the glory. Haha-Rgfab

Reply:Could you get a welding job at the oil refinery?
Reply:I wont be aws certified till may. but in may I will be certified smaw, gtaw, gmaw. I plan on refinery or pipeline work
Reply:Your school gives you aws certs? That's not a bad deal. Will you be getting structural or pipe certs? All positions and etc.?
Reply:its just general im not sure though cuz we are doing vertical overhead and all of the positions to a aws cert and then pipe nxt semester
Reply:all advanced positions and i can take pipe certs sense are instructor is the one certifying us if we want the test we practice then take it
Reply:School pipe certs are nice, but I wouldn't expect it to help you much in the real world. You still have to test everywhere you go.
