Good evening everyone!!So, I'm building a BBQ trailer... The tongue sticks out 4' in front of the frame and I've decided to run a stiffener made from flat stock under the full lenght of the tongue...Question: Should I fully weld this out? I'm thinking it'd be more rigid if welded 100%, but it would have more "flex" if I only skip welded it, and might be longer lasting. I'm thinking of skip welding for the application, but I thought I'd ask here, first. What says WW? Thanks in advance, guys [Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. Reply:I vote skip weld it...But I realize that a tongue stiffener on an 800 pound BBQ trailer is probably overkill anyway, and either method would work...thanks for the reply [Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. See you on YouTube! -ChuckE2009

Reply:This is where an engineering degree would come in handy. I skip weld a lot of things, because it is easy to over weld something. I try to have my stops in the center of the weld. Because the crater is the weakest part of the weld. I have also used caulking between the welds before painting so water doesn't get under and start rusting. Reply:CEP, I was taught to do the same thing. a couple of years ago I posted a picture of a crater in the center and i really got my chops busted by some. I do it a lot on thinner metal where when you get to the edge after welding a bead the edge doesn't fall out on you. I also was taught to always start on the edge and never stop on the edge. if you need to carry to the edge, then don't. save an inch and then go from the edge to the stop. It looks better and chances are if you are running hot then you don't leave a wash or crater at the edge to create a fault. There are exceptions to the rule like when you are weld vertical.Last edited by Scott Young; 09-13-2013 at 10:39 AM.
Reply:a full weld will create more stress and warpage. Skip weld it. it doesn't take that long to draw out your pattern. I like to alternate on each side though I have seen it paired on each side. The engineer had his reason I guess for pairing. He did it several times. I don't know what pairing would do versus alternating, but to me alternating seems stronger.
Reply:Scott it is a lot easier when following a engineer's drawings, or a WPS. Takes a lot of the guess work out of it for us low life welders. Dont pay any attention to meIm just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:Just a question here guys. How could a piece of flat stock stiffen the tongue? If you just weld it under, it isn't that effective so I guess we are talking about some other way? I just can't visualize it.
