i am planning on attending school for welding next year...however i am a convicted felon from 2004....will this hinder me in my quest to become a welder?

Reply:In fact, many prisons have welding classes
Reply:Yes, depending where you work. One of our local shops gets government contracts that require employee background checks and no felonys. Reply:Maybe. Many companies that do government work won't hire felons for security reasons..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Can't you apply for a pardon ?

Reply:Some of the places I have had to work, I think a felony was almost a requirement. But yeah, it really depends on the place I would think. Be upfront and honest. Best of luck to ya man. If you cant fix it with a hammer, it must be an electrical problem."Boy, everyone starts with a full bag of luck and an empty bag of experience. Reply:It all depends upon the employer. Honesty will sometimes get you hired with the right boss. As to a pardon, in California at least, with successful completion of one's probation or parole conditions, it's possible to apply for a pardon. There is a process that is set forth in the California Penal Code (and all other states) that shows the steps to be taken and which crimes may be pardoned. In California, there is the possibility of pardon for most crimes with the exception of sex crimes in general. In all cases of which I am aware, the statute calls out that this process can only be done with the representation of an attorney. Generally, there is only paperwork and no hearing but the papers have to be perfectly done, thus the need for a lawyer. The goal is to have the governor of your state sign the pardon. This will remove any limitations placed on a person with a felony including gun ownership. Welding is a great profession. Reply:In the small shop I work at that my cousin owns, hes had a few people with records apply. All for just general shop help, nothing skilled. One guy literally told us he's still dealing dope after jail. Long story he didn't stay long after he said that. The other guy basically said hes had had a rough past but working to turn his life around. Hes still there, and hes doing great. I think the only time its a issue is the installation at a school were doing soon. Before work any contractor planning to work at the school is in process of back round checks and finger prints just to do work on a roof at a school. At the same time I do see were the school is coming from as they don't want to risk the children.Good luck in finding work, give it time and you can do great things if you have the right attitude.PROUD   AMERICAN
Reply:No nuclear work, possibly ever.  Even an expungement will still show up in a security background check. No personal experience with a record, but this is according to CB&I. Non-nuclear power plants are different and not as restrictive.
Reply:"you're looking for a job, tell them nothing, you don't need any condescending moralists making judgement calls on you to make themselves feel superior."Sure you might get the job, but its nearly impossible now and days to hide anything. More than likely any employer will at some point find out your history. If you were honest from the word go it wouldn't be an issue. But if you were shady and they found out, what's it going to look like?It goes beyond a superiority complex my friend. I have nothing to gain, or anyone to I impress.  I have given lots of chances to all walks of life, sure I've been burned, but most of the time you would be surprised how loyal people can be when you were the person to give them a chance to get their life on track.  I'm a firm believer that you get what you give in this short time we get to spend together. And no, I am not a Christian moralist, nor am I a tree hugging hippie. I mean no offense, I am only using the words discussed. -Pottsie

Reply:Be up front and honest.  I would rather hire a felon who admitted his status, and a drug or alcohol addict that knows his issues than a guy who is still hiding it.  I have been burnt in the past, but my opinion is the same.  I have been burnt by clean employees more.  We are all guilty of something, you just got caught.Last edited by blackbart; 09-19-2013 at 11:29 PM.
Reply:I know a guy, that worked for us for many years.  1978 to 1995 to be exact.  He was a young man when he started working for us, but had just gotten out of prison.  His history, he was in a bar, got in an argument with some guy, other guy goes to walk off, and "Rabbit" (that is his nickname) had a small old timer type pocket knife, opened it and threw it.  It stuck in the back of the guys leg...  He went to prison for assault with a deadly weapon..  While in prison, he took a welding class.  He said they taught classes that they knew the convict could never use as a profession, since they are a convicted felon.  I have never researched that, and myself can't understand why a felon who served their time couldn't in fact weld in most situations.  I think it's pretty stupid myself, some of the things that are considered a "felony".  I knew another guy that in fact served time for murder, similar situation, except the other guy started an actual physical fight with him in a bar.  He had witnesses, the other guy hit him with a beer bottle.  The fight got out of control, and the guy that started it ended up dying from his injuries, so the guy I knew was convicted of murder...  Myself, I don't see that as the same thing as someone plotting out and executing the killing of somebody.  But it's a felony just the same...  Also, as a felon, rights are lost such as voting, or owning a firearm.  Sorry, but even if someone commited a felony offense, if they have completed thier sentence as prescribed by the court, why can they not vote?  If it was a non-violent crime, why can they not own a firearm?-------------------------Chemetron AC/DC 300 HFSnap-On MM300L Lincoln SP140 Lincoln AC/DC 225g Lincoln SA200 Lincoln SA200 Miller Bobcat 225GVictor torchesH&M and Mathey beveling machinesMcElroy Plastic pipe fusion

Reply:If I had a welding shop, I would consider someone with a criminal background on a case by case basis. It all depends on the nature of the crime since as pointed out above, some felonies are not inherently violent. Also, it has a lot to do with how far in the past the crime occurred. That said, I would insist on random drug testing for all employees. If you have a dirty test, out you go. I'm not telling anyone not to take drugs, just that if you were to do that, you wouldn't be working for me.Miller Millermatic 252Miller Syncrowave 200Liincoln AC-DC 225Victor O-A Set

They are most likely willing to overlook a felony conviction (dependent on type) but not dishonesty. You will not be able to work on a government facility, or for a company who does work for the government. This is mostly due to being unable to obtain a security clearance. You should be just fine for commercial and industrial shops/shipyards/plants, as long as they are not nuclear. Oil field work also.Smaller shops and mom/pop type business may discriminate, depending on the owners prerogative.
