Reply:VP buildings if your set on a steel building, EPS or Morton if you just want a pole barn. It would be cool but very impractical for a home owner
Reply:Just wondering after looking at the shotty little shed home depot has.
Reply:Yes. I'm doing a small storage building right now.http://www.digitaldesigntechnology.com/storagebuilding/About $500 in materials so far for the whole thing because I'm making it very water tight. Still have to buy a door. Thinking of Lowes 36" steel panel door with frame. On sale $119.00 right now.ThermalArc 161STL TIG/Stick (160amp)Lincoln weld-pak 100 (fluxcore)4X6 Enco bandsaw10" skillsaw with metal blade for 45degrees (works)4" grinderWeld for fun. Reply:I have a friend that has more than 2 decades of  extensive experience consulting and designing code compliant steel frame homes and commercial buildings, many to California earthquake and fire codes. He lives in a very attractive steel frame home. Externally they appear identical to wood frame construction.        He may be able to refer you to standards and professional consultants.       He is department head of the Engineering and Technology Education  Dept in the College of Engineering  at Utah State University.           Dr Kurt Becker          umc 6000 , USU, ET&E dept          college hill          Logan Ut 84321           e-mail,  [email protected] work toys; lathes, mills, drills, saws,  robots, lasers ironworker, shears, brake, press, grinders, tensile tester,  torches, tigs, migs, sticks, platten table, positioner,  plasmas , gleeble and spot. Reply:If you are building a small building, that does not need to be code compliant, I have had good success simply substituting commercial steel studs (no, not the kind that you are if you are reading this...) of the same size as the wood you would normally use, they come in several standard thicknesses. Built this way they will almost certainly be much superior to a sheet steel yard building. One possibility is to buy a small building and add steel stud material to add an internal frame to beef it up. Seems like a few years ago they were the same cost as wood studs as well. Standard methods of joining are screwing, welding, bolting or embossing. Plywood or MDF siding, steel sheet, steel roofing, plywood or steel subfloor with lighweight concrete flooring, and wall sheetrock simply screw right to the studs. It is easy to work with and because it doesn't warp or swell with moisture it make a nice straight wall real easy. With the right siding and wall materials flood damage is a non issue. You can build a workshop or shed that has no flammable materials.  You should use insulating bushings however if you are wiring with romex. Most people use conduit. Just about every commercial builder has a LOT of experience with these studs on interior work.  The appropriate load and span charts for each size and thickness should be available from the dealers. (google "steel studs") If it needs to be code compliant, then you will need to have a person such as Dr Becker, or a local expert refer you to a licensed engineer.past work toys; lathes, mills, drills, saws,  robots, lasers ironworker, shears, brake, press, grinders, tensile tester,  torches, tigs, migs, sticks, platten table, positioner,  plasmas , gleeble and spot. Reply:Yes, I got a job for 2 days and I built a 15x40 barn that they ship.  They used a large oil pipe for skids so they can move the building around their property.  They just used square tubing for the framework, They used heavy tubing for the uprights/rafters, can't remember if it was 1/4" or 1/8".  We started by making the base frame.  Once we had that we made the first upright/rafter.  Put some flat stock on there and turned the first one into a jig to make the rest of them (4 in total), once we had the other 3 built we knocked off the flat stock.  Then it was measuring and getting them set up.  Using lighter gauge tubing they spanned across the rafters, this tied them together and it provided the place to attach the tin to. Down there they don't have the snow we deal with up here, so they don't have as much snow loads to worry about.  If I was building something that big up here I'd probably add another upright/rafter or two with that big of span.
Reply:I bet Ocean Beach has some pretty strict building codes on size for a shed.Probably need a permit for anything more than 100 square feet Yup:"One story detached accessory buildings used as tool and storage sheds, playhouses and similar uses are exempt, provided the roof area does not exceed 120 square feet."http://www.sandiego.gov/development-...etin/ib115.pdfInteresting part is that they also mention a Coastal Zone which seems to nullify any exemptions for a patioLast edited by Broccoli1; 06-10-2011 at 02:07 PM.Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge

Reply:I built a 24'x40' barn over 30 years ago that has stood up to a 95 mph wind. I also bulit a double garage with an attached carport that will hold two large motorhomes or camp trailers under the port about 20 years ago. My designs were good enough to meet building codes then. Don't know about now. It was a lot of work but saved a lot of money over having them built by a contractor.
