Unions? Structural steel? pipeliner? custom fabricator?

Ive been watching videos of some of the different areas in welding and have some question what exactly is it like to be a union welder? whats the difference bewteen union and non union welders? which field of welding is better pipeliner or structual? i posted this on hobarts site a while back and wanted a wider spectrum of opinionsLincoln pro core 125 14''chop saw7 inch grinder,2-4.5 inch grinders,electric die grinder.Half inch drillAnd alot of hand tools
Reply:Union welders get insurance and a retirement plan.Pipe welders in general make more hourly than structural.
Reply:All depends where you are. If your in a Pro Union state like my self NY. Union Trade are going to get paid top dollar. You almost gurented to be making 100k plus Benefits package.

Reply:Flux core Joe... In our local...798...they are called "Darlings" because they are pampered, spoiled, treated like the "Best thing since melted metal" and are truly professionals. As in any organization...There are the big, bad and the ugly!
Reply:I will just chime in on the Union side of things...I work for (but am not a member of) a union. The advantages are many: Medical coverage, pension, within-your-field-job opportunities.Especially over the long term!Construction of [Buildings, pipelines, bridges, etc.] is short term. Compared to a 30+ year career that is.So, if your medical plan and pension are with the same place regardless of who you are working for now, yesterday or tomorrow, it holds great peace-of-mind. The fact that when a contractor needs x-number of workers that have y-skills, the union local sends you to the job.
