What a horrible name that is, rework. On the brighter side of things, I found a simple answer to filling in holes. I was digging around the iron worker for plugs when I ran across some that had transfer holes drilled in them. They worked great and you didnt have to mess up your needle nose pliers or tack something to them. After I got the job done, I put the rest in my locker for uses down the road. On another job I had to readjust a piece of channel and found something interesting behind it.It's not easy seeing how much undercut was on it other than the fact that I could prop a dime in it. Reply:Holy undercut... I can't figure out what kind of weld that is...also when I need a plug sometimes I will tack a piece of scrap to it to hold in place while I get a couple tacks on it....Lincoln pro mig 180Lincoln Square Wave Tig 300/wp 20/home built water cooler Victor, Purox, Harris, O/A welding/cutting setupsVintage Craftsman drill pressVintage Craftsman/Atlas 12"x 36'' lathe7''x 12'' w/c band saw Everlast 140 st

Reply:What plasma do you have? I just did a LOT of gouging with my Powermax 65 and I've yet to ruin a gun. I barely go through consumables with it. I won't ever go back to CAG. Never. Reply:I gouge with our Powermax 1650 all the time. We bought the heat shield because we were trashing gloves all the time. With a little practice you won't go through the consumables. Still use the ArcAir to get into tight places because of the shape of the gun and the heat shield. Also, if you're cutting apart somebody elses mess and throwing it into scrap, use the gouging setup and it makes quick work of it compared to the drag tip.Millermatic 200Hobart Handler 120Victor O/A & Ramco BandsawLincoln 225 ACSnapOn AD HoodMiller XMT304/22AHypertherm Powermax 1650 G3Lincoln Idealarc DC600 w/Extreme 12 VSMiller Digital Elite "Joker"

Reply:Because the gusset was behind another support, I wasnt too concerned with having a little bit of slag in my weld, so I just rolled uphill with the machine set brutally hot. Fortunately that was the only one that looked that bad. If it were any of the other gussets, then I would have broke out the scarfing rod. I think plasma would have been too tight in that space. And a torch would have taken too long. Also, it was 1/16" dualshield.Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.

Reply:Re gouging....the newer plasma's from Hypertherm (65 and 85) have a much higher tolerance for a long arc (higher load voltage)....making them gouging animals. The gouging nozzle last just about forever.....and because of the long arc it reaches into tight spots easily.I agree that the 600 does not have the power to gouge well.....good gouging starts with the Powermax45.....gets better with the 65 and kicks butt with the 85.Jim Colt |
