I was hoping to get some responded on this just for the fun of it. Who is the best welder you've ever seen? What made him the best? Is there any system to rank welders in the world? Thx
Reply:The one whose welds don't fail as often as the other guys./thread
Reply:it all depends on the critieria.  I have seen artisan welders that I wouldn't want on a job due to their slowness and  perfectionist mentality.  on the other hand, I have seen guys that can weld upside down with a mirror and even blindly draw a bead offhanded and soaking wet that I wouldn't want to put up against zap's or zt's artistic welds.  I am not saying I wouldn't want either of the last two, I am simply saying depends on the job and the requirements as to who makes the better welder.
Reply:That's a loaded question but I think nobody is.There will always be someone somewhere better than you even if you or me never actually see it....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

He could make the most beautiful open root SMAW 6-G stainless steel welds with 308-16 I have ever seen. He had a folder about 1 1/2-inches thick full of certs.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:Truthfully, when I did a lot more welding years ago, most pros I knew were pretty average welders based on "perfect looking" welds. But every day, day after day, they laid welds that were very good with an extremely low failure rate on different thicknesses in all positions. To me, that is great welder.  They can do it consistently over a broad range of applications. Also, every welder that was better than me was very helpful and willing to pass on knowledge.  I know how to weld because others learned and passed it on.  Dave J.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:You wont find amazing welders on the internet. Dont tell me you can because i wont listen to you.All the good welders i know are busy as ****. Always doing something...if not they are taking cert tests.I have 49 certs that are current and thats nothing! If welding is your hobby and your career i suggest you start your own business. Only because you will put the money you make to buy more "toys" which will then make you more money.

Reply:Originally Posted by BD1Hey, that made me  laugh. I haven't seen any post by him lately. I worked with a welder 40 years ago when I was a pipefitter apprentice. Back then we only used 6010 on pipe. He wore WHITE cotton gloves, stuck the rod in the END of the stinger stickin straight up , then bent it down to his liking. He said nobody ever uses the end so it is not worn out and holds the rod firmly. It didn't matter where, what size, daylight or night, each weld looked the same . It was awesome. They looked like a machine. There was even a ''Texas Weave',' horizontal weld on risers that was so straight it looked like you marked it with a wrap a round. His name is Earl Bissel of 597. I don't know if he is still alive .   He used to weld on ships when he started. His welds were so pretty that he did all the gravy work. Nothing but bulkhead door welding. He taught me a lot and gave me the opportunity to weld. Back then most welders would not even let you watch ! They were afraid you were gonna take their job. Thanks EARL !

Wes, Terry, Hector and the rest; they may not be the best welders in the world, especially if you ask them, but they've forgotten more than I'll ever know and I am and will always be grateful to them for not only taking the time to teach but to drive, in Hector's case, 6 hours from Yuma to do it. Respectfully, some of the most caring, sharing, knowlegable people I've met in 55 years have been the welders or "weldors" on this board. To me, the best welders in the world are those who give so that others may improve.

Reply:No, not many welders; thankfully from the sound of it. Just happy with the few I've met here. And as for cleaning "horse poopie", that's my day job! Not there's a job you meet some really great souls at. Horses and cowboys. They've always been my role models.

Reply:Different angle:The "best" (detest that word) welder is one who fails the first time, fails "better" the second time, fails "bestest" the third time, and then ....  invests even more time and B/S/Ts (blood, sweet, tears) to better him/herself to grow/improve. Eventually an 'Ah Ha' moment, termed "illumination", is reached when the welder 'gets it' and can consistently accomplish the task at hand. There are so many 'best' welders right here on WW, from my outlook, that my head spins when their welds are posted.  No names mentioned (intentionally).  A 'best' welder is the brah who mentors *newer* welders by hosting clinics and leading the charge to grow the talent. So, the "best"? The dude who gets done what needs to be done and the weld meets a spec'd requirement."Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi
