Dear Friends,We have a doubt here would like to seek clarification.(Not taking Pre-Qualified Weld Procedures into discussion in this Posting) Our fabricator had qualified a new WPS/PQR using SMAW + FCAW-Gas processes for fabrication purposes. This WPS/PQR was set up and qualified based on AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code-Steel, using a 6-inch diameter pipe welded in 6G positionSMAW process for root - One layerSubsequent fill and cap with semi-automatic FCAW-Gas process.Because of the FCAW-Gas process is unlikely to produce a good quality root pass, therefore SMAW is used as a root pass (Backing run). However, in actual production where weld joints can be accessed from both sides, back gouging is applicable, in this case can the weld joint be fully welded with FCAW-Gas process without using the SMAW backing? and upon completion of one side, back gouge from the other side.AWS D1.1 Table 4.5 - General (35) 'The omission, but no inclusion of backing or backgouging" Is this means that we are allowed to weld a joint with full FCAW-Gas process from one side and back gouge from the other sideHowever, if the joint is NOT accessible, SMAW backing is a MUST, in the case that SMAW root pass is not welded, the said WPS/PQR required Re-QualificationCorrect me if I am wrong |
