Reply:I had always heard that carpenters were allergic to steel...
Reply:Nice photos!  ahahah and my boss tells me that us welders are allergic to grease, he friggin hates it with a passion if its on pieces that we are fixing.
Reply:Interesting blend of wood & steel in that job there. Architect is making use of everything thing available."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt
Reply:Is the span in photo3 around 20 to 24 feet? Or is it more? It's amazing how open the floor plans can be with some steel.
Reply:I can tell you every day that carpenters don't understand steel at all.    They don't get the fact that we cant just lay it up on our knee and take another 3/8" off it.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.

Reply:Those spans are 22' i layed out a tape on them today.Got a few more pics i,ll upload and post in a bit.
Reply:I like those jobs, if you make the steel they fall in to place.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:More pics this is what below the columns in the 3rd pic of the first post. These are at the garage entrance. Attached Images
Reply:It's a good thing there are engineers to do the math for us. Usually if I design something off the cuff it grows by 300% the second it leaves the shop. Usually we think it has to weigh a ton to hold stuff up. Maybe it's just me though. I make something for my house, then I get it home and I realize it could hold up the world.CERTIFICATIONS:7018M- H.V.O10718M- H.V.O11018M- H.V.O9N10- H.V.O71T-1-HYM- H.O.V100S1 PULSE ARC 0,035- H.O.V100S1 PULSE ARC 0.045- H.O.VER70S-3 PULSE ARC 0.035 H.O.VER70S-3 PULSE ARC 0.045 H.O.VER5554- H.O.V
Reply:nice job all around .wish i had garage space like that. that building isn't going anywhere.........
Reply:When I worked in Palos Verdes Estates, EVERY new house or remodel had steel in it.  Because of the seismic codes out in L.A., the steel was used more for portal frames [for lateral bracing] than in floor systems.  The house being built next door had lotsa both, and neither the carpenters or steel men had any problems with coordination.    They get used to it.

Reply:the intersection of the structural members looks a little 'busy' did the engineer spec that fit up?
Reply:Looks like you have some nice work there. The last time I did some welding in a home, It had an addition put on with a little structure like that.  I told them no problem about fire.   My son was there as fire watch.  Slag fell in my shirt pocket and caught it on fire.    Home owner saw it....I had long johns on so I didn't get burnt. It was the only problem we had.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I wish I could find the rest of the picts of this project.36 12' tall columns in the basement alone. Upper beams are W12's IIRC. We cut out 2 columns later and installed 2 W36 beams to span the removed columns. Wish I could find the picts of that. I didn't do any of the welding. We did all the footing work and we helped our friend who did the steel set the columns and beams since we were on site anyways for other stuff.
