Ok heres the thing. My instructor was like since you did everything on mig so far.I'm going to put you on v grooves. The instructor said its like a butt joint in a way lol. I dont think so. anyway how much of a gap between the grooves ? and do I have to have small streamers or weave back and forth on the groove.
Reply:Are you migging this?? With stick, I usually go with 3/32 or 1/8 (using electrode stubs), but thats with 1/4" plate. It just depends. How thick is your material, what process, electrode (if stick), etc?[Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. See you on YouTube! -ChuckE2009
Reply:i said mig.i dont know about thickness.
Reply:We have the students use 3/8" beveled plate, 1/8" land, 3/32" gap open root. .035 wire, 92/8 argon/CO2, 17.5 volts, wire about 250 ish on the XMT's pushing the weld. Prep is important. 90% of the students have issues because of plate prep. The land needs to be an even 1/8" all the way, gap straight and equal. The ones who rush grinding and filing their plates and don't get the prep right usually always can't get full penetration on their root passes.Usually they can get the bead going on their tack and just move right strait down the center with little or no motion. If the gap is too wide, they might have to weave a bit to help close it up, but most loose the puddle and blow thru. If they tighten up the gap they won't get full penetration. Thicker/ thinner lands cause the same issues. After they get the root pass aprooved, they lay 2 beads to fill and then cap..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Your description seems to be lacking in some respect. An open root, double-bevel, vee-groove, butt-joint is 100% fit-up critical, just as DSW described it. A double-bevel, vee-groove, butt-joint WITH backing is also sensitive to fit-up, but may be slightly more forgiving if your hand shakes a bit. I would not use any weave at this point, just run stringers.Your preparation will become your greatest asset, or your worst enemy, depending on your attention to detail. Attached ImagesCity of L.A.
