No matter how good the fit up is, no matter how level my table is, no matter how many times I check it with a square, and no matter what clamps, magnets, brackets, whatever I use, every single rectangle I weld up comes out "off". There's no way I am always buying bent steel is there?Big F**king HammerJumper cables & 2 marine batteriesJaws of life

Reply:Warpage is a fact of life. You can minimize it, but you can't eliminate it. There are techniques for correcting it, though.Everlast PA160-STH... and that's about it!

Reply:How do you mean by "it comes out off"? Do you mean the corners aren't square, or that it wont lay flat? I have a feeling what you are experiencing is caused by heat drawing. The heat from the welding is pulling the pieces out of alignment. Which way are you having trouble? Post some pix if you can.

Reply:1" x 1", 16 gauge square tube. Joining 45's. Tacking one long, one short, checking with a square, level, etc. Repeating. Those always seem to come out awesome. Good 90's. It's when I turn the two "L's" into a rectangle that it all goes to s***. I clamp the two "L's" together, check with a square, level, tape fro corner to corner, yadda yadda, tack, check again, when it looks good I weld it up. I've tried using these clamps: http://www.stronghandtools.com/stron...ointmaster.php (the PL series and the PT series), I've even borrowed one of those super expensive Bessey 90 degree clamp things. Same thing all the time. One corner seems to be higher than the others yet corner to corner they measure out the same.Big F**king HammerJumper cables & 2 marine batteriesJaws of life

Reply:CEP, that was interesting.........well, until the natural gas part I will have to remember to try that next time. It sure sounds like it makes sense."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
Reply:That video makes perfect sense as in when I think about it, I welded up the corners the exact opposite the way he said to. D'oh!Big F**king HammerJumper cables & 2 marine batteriesJaws of life
Reply:I thought it was an interesting video. Not that I do it that way. I tack everything up. Check with square, tape measure. Then decide where to start welding. Make a few welds, re-check, decide where to continue welding. Repeat as necessary. When it's all said and done, if I don't like it, I grab the torch, and spray bottle. Reply:Another reason for a solid steel table top. Lay everything out. Tack upright angles in each corner. Cut the tube to fit within. Nail it with the welder. It can't go anywhere.......unless an imaginary entity joins the fiesta.Bubble gumTooth pixDuct tapeBlack glueGBMF hammerScrew gun --bad battery (see above)
Reply:Back in the 70s I got stuck building 200 of these bus shelters. They had 1/8-inch tolerance on the legs. A lot of heat shrinking maintaining 1/8-inch tolerance. Reply:When I think about it even more, one side I would weld inside to out and then lean over and weld the other corners outside in. D'oh! Cut off wheel time when I get back to the shop.Big F**king HammerJumper cables & 2 marine batteriesJaws of life
