I bought a Lincoln AC/DC 125/225 "buzzbox" welder a few weeks ago. I've been running 6010 and 7018 beads on scrap steel plate. I think I have the machine set right but when I try to run 6010 vertical up i'm having a hard time. Should I do the inverted T technique or just keep nice tight side to sides as I run uphill? I am having better luck with the 7018 uphill than the 6010.I have pics of some beads I ran in the flat position.
Reply:here are 2 plates joined together at a right angle and I welded in the flat position. I used a 6010 root bead, 2 7018 stringer beads, and a 7018 weave on top . I am still getting used to watching both the puddle and where i'm going so sometimes I don't make perfectly straight beads. id appreciate any comments and criticism
Reply:Actually they're not to bad. Some of them look a little cold, or you could speed up your travel speed some. The last two, are you doing a figure eight motion?Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:I tried some whip and pause with 6010 5p and this is what I came out with...here are some pics of 6010 uphill on plate... still having some problems

Reply:Some of them look really good! It's hard for anybody to make a weld look good on a flat plate. Do some fillets, lap joints, or groove welds. Reply:thanks CEP I appreciate the encouragement. i'll definitely start trying some different kinds of joints to become more familiar with how to weld in different positions. I just started a few weeks ago but im addicted to burning rods and I wish I would've started years ago. Ive tried pipe before but its pretty difficult. One day ill get my pipe welds looking like yours and pass that 6g certification!  ill keep posting the different things I try so ya can lmk what im doing right or wrong
Reply:Other than a few pipe tests, few structural pipe braces, and a whole lot of hand rail, I never welded much pipe. UA members get bent out of shape when other unions weld pipe! Reply:the reason why you can not weld  so good with 6010 because it is a flietweld electrode .you better can welding with 7018 this is suitable for welding bottom upwards .E6010 Type of Covering : High cellulose sodium , Type of current dcep
Reply:Your doing great, 6010 is a fast freeze rod, don't listen to the guy above me. Sounds like he's reading the MSDS for a hot dog. If you look back at your pics, when you had a straight edge to follow you killed it! But then you started to drift around after that but still not that bad. Whip and pause and being spot on accurate just comes with practice and seems your well on your way to nailing it down!I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys

Reply:When you weld with such electrodes then you should use high power (ampere )
Reply:To make a welder qualification you 're not going to weld cellulose and basic electrode for welding a test piece becaus this is not correct

Reply:The reason that you are having trouble with 6010 uphill is that it is primarily used downhill. There is good reason for it, it works very well downhill. Work on that first and when you have that down, then try going uphill with it. It is a fairly rare event to have to test uphill, on plate, with 6010, uphill. Not saying it isn't, or can't be done, just saying it is not common. So unless you are prepping for a very specific test, then learn how to use the rod in the position that it excels in.

Reply:weldermike thanks man I try to practice whenever I can. 6010 def can be run uphill I see guys do it all the time on pipe. I think 6010 can be run up and down, where 7018 only runs up. appreciatethe encouragement weldermike. people don't know how hard it is to weld until they try it. some of the welds I see guys make should be considered a form of artwork theyre so good
Reply:@TozziWelding ,your certificates valid for the upward and downward welding , so you're a super welder . Last edited by denlow60; 09-30-2013 at 08:07 AM.

Reply:Denlow, how old are you if you don't mind me asking. And if even if you do mind I really don't give a sh!t If you plan on spending a lot of time here like most of us do, your coming across in a bad way. There's a lot of seasoned talent here and it would benefit you too just listen sometimes. Not one person here knows everything about welding, and what we love about it, is after years of lifetimes everybody still learns something almost everyday. So relax and enjoy and stop fighting. Trying to sound smart is making you look stupid.I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys

The guy you're trying to "educate" on 6010, and how welding is done in the real world? He earned a living as a welder his whole life, and now that he's retired, he spends a lot of time here on WW and elsewhere helping folks like me become better welders. He sure as heck doesn't need me to stick up for him, but since you asked... that's who I was referring to in the quote. If you had been on this forum for more than five minutes, and had been paying any attention, you would know who you were talking to. Next you'll be telling Zap what coin to include in his photos.

Reply:Not sure where this 49,000 pound tensil strength number came from. Back in my school days a 6010 rod was rated at 60 ksi tensile strength (60,000 psi). Which is not quite twice the strength of A-36 mild hot rolled steel. So, weak rod, well weaker than 7018, but still a bit more hefty than what you normally welds.  I never said it wasn't done, just that it was easier to weld 6010 downhill, so why bust your butt learning uphill first. Get downhill down, then if you want practice uphill. It might behoove you to find a QWP (qualified welding procedure) and see what that tells you about gap, root land, etc. I can't recall ever using 6010 uphill, as the procedure I was welding to said 6010 downhill, and 7018 up, so that is what I did. Now I pretty much use 7018 for nearly everything, except repairs on rusty crap, and welding on pipe corrals.  Denlow, you are pretty new here. Take it easy. relax and do a little reading, then spend some time with your responses. work on a little better grammar, and spelling, as that seems to cause a bit of confusion in your response. Read your posts before hitting the send button and they might make a little more sense.

Reply:Uphill with 6010 root and finish out with 7018 has been a basic PIPE weld test of years !!!!!!!!!!!!   I even had a plate test with 6010 uphill. The old days, 40 years ago all the pipe welding we did was with 6010  UPHILL . Downhillers were usually travel hands from a southern state who were awesome welders. Some even had all their teeth !

Reply:Holy $hit, look what I found in my archives, an old funny paper that says I am certified to weld pipe with 6010 to ASME section IX standards........I must have killed thousands of children and unicorns when all the piping I put in with this company let go because 6010 is NFG.......Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:John that is obliviously a forgery! Because I read somewhere on the Internet that you can not run 6010 vertically up hill, and 6010 is no good!
