Ok I am having some issues picking a tig welder. I was set on a dynasty 200dx for the longest time, but 4000 is a lot of money. I want an inverter machine because of their size and their power consumption. I dont see my self welding for hours on end, maybe a few hours a week. Sometimes a lot more sometimes none. Would going with a transformer machine kill the power bill? Like a syncro 200 or maybe 250? Someone please talk some sense into me I will use it for race car and off road fabrication.....HTP Invertig 201Lincoln Idealarc SP250Miller 180 AC StickBy farmall:They should have held the seagull closer to the work, squeezing evenly for best deposition.
Reply:The dynasty will use 1/3 the power the Syncrowave 200 would judging by the input specs on max ratings. It's not that hard to figure. Syncrowave is 47 amps on 230v so about 10.8KW/hr, and the dynasty is 15.8amps on 230v for 3.6KW/hr according to the rated input on 150 amp tig. Take you price per KW hr off your electric bill and multiply that by the KW needed as well as how many hours you think you'll use the machine to get a rough idea on electric costs worst case if you were running full time in that hour. It will take a lot of hours to burn up $2000 in electric where I live just running the tig.The Dynasty does have more options than the Syncowave. I was in you possition a few years back, and couldn't justify the added cost so I bought the Syncro 200. I'd probably still make the same choice today because of cost if I was buying new, though I'd probably be tempted to get a used Dynasty if I could get a nice one for $2500 or so..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:the dynasty is a great machine and the best stick welder ive usedso all you need is is a couple cables, electrode holder, work clampand some rods and you can weld anywhere
Reply:Get the Synchro200.  It uses a little more power but you're not setting up a big shop with a room full of them.  As a hobbyist, you won't even notice it on your power bill so it's hardly a consideration.  As someone indicated, it's going to be a LONG time (if ever) that you recoup the extra cost of a Dynasty in power savings.Lincoln AC225 & MigPak 140, Lincoln Magnum SpoolGun, Miller Spectrum 375-X Plasma, Syncrowave 200 TIG, Millermatic 252 MIG, Miller Digital Elite, General 7x12" horiz/vert bandsaw, 3' box/pan brake, 20 ton press, milling machine, 12x28 lathe, etc.

Reply:+1 on the syncrowave. The reason to get a dynasty is for portablity, or the advanced AC stuff. For tig on steel, in the shop, there is no avantage. If I were you I'd be searching for a used transformer machine that comes with a water cooled torch and cooler.Ian TannerKawasaki KX450 and many other fine tools
Reply:Hmm ok guys thanks a lot! I am trying to get our old (I think its a dialarc?) 330a miller at our shop. Its the huge fridge size welder, but it has a nice bernard cooler setup on it. It barely gets used maybe that would be a good option? Its damn big though!HTP Invertig 201Lincoln Idealarc SP250Miller 180 AC StickBy farmall:They should have held the seagull closer to the work, squeezing evenly for best deposition.

Reply:wow nice deal on the esab. Im 6 hrs north off La.... As far as the dynasty now they are 3k just machine.... And I am not going to get a TA because the priv\ce has gone up about 700 bucks which doesnt thrill me. I swear I remember seeing them for like 1900 a few years ago? I was welding a lot of aluminum today at work on our synchrowave 351, I like the way it welds, so I guess I am looking for a synchro or try and get that old refridgerator HTP Invertig 201Lincoln Idealarc SP250Miller 180 AC StickBy farmall:They should have held the seagull closer to the work, squeezing evenly for best deposition.
Reply:One thing that hasn't been mentioned . . . make sure you have adequate power in your shop for a transformer welder.  A Syncrowave 250 needs a 100 amp circuit for max output.
Reply:This is at my house, but we got a 200 amp main panel so I should be good. My 250 mig has no issues with it.HTP Invertig 201Lincoln Idealarc SP250Miller 180 AC StickBy farmall:They should have held the seagull closer to the work, squeezing evenly for best deposition.
Reply:I've never seen an appreciable increase in the power bill and all my welders are transformer...
