What kind of differences should I expect when welding on a machined V-groove for open root on 6G pipe compared to a flame cut groove? The welding process is TIG open root (1/8 gap w/ 1/8 filler), TIG hot pass, 7018 fill and cap. I'm mostly interested in info regarding the TIG root and any root repair tips you might have. I've noticed that root repairs on flame cut tend to be a bit hit or miss. I've damn near mastered 6G on flame cut pipe, but the certification test calls for machine cut only. The school I'm in lacks a pipe beveler the students can use, so we're not given any machined pipe to practice on till a few days before we test out. And we're only given 2 joints of machined pipe when we do finally get our hands on some. I'd rather not screw up the first one due to lack of info, so I'm asking you your tips and suggestions on the differences between the two.Thanks,WayneP.S., I'd like to get past the first 12 replies dogging and flaming me about my post. Lets just get straight to the topic. Thanks Last edited by ElectricSquid; 05-11-2011 at 11:04 AM.
Reply:You will like a machine cut bevel, but doing tests are usually the only time you will ever see them so if you got flame cut bevels down you'll have no problems at all.6 Miller Big Blue 600 Air Paks2 Miller 400D6 Lincoln LN-25's4 Miller Xtreme 12VS2 Miller Dimension 812 4 Climax BW-3000Z bore welders Hypertherm 65 and 85Bug-O Track BugPair of Welpers
Reply:Machine cut will be great. Worry not.
Reply:agreed...If you can root a flame cut joint, the machine bevel will be a snap...
