Hi, I am trying to do some tig welding in my garage. I start to buy tig welder and argon cylinder. The argon gas cylinder (20 Cu. Ft.) and regulator are from Harbor Freight. Yesterday I brought the cylinder to one of the welding supply shop to fill the argon gas ($13 + tax), after I came home put the regulator on, it only shows 1200psi. I search the forum and found the pressure should be around 2200psi +- 10%. I called the shop, they told me because the cylinder safety valve pup up during the filling, that's why they can only fill in 1200psi. Question: are they talking about nonsense or I should return the cylinder to Harbor Freight?Thanks.
Reply:20 CF! So it's about the size of a big gulp? You're going to go through that in 1 1/2 hrs or less, even with 2200psi, then back to the fill station. I had an 80 CF tank and just upgraded to a 120, much better, and fills are the same price. "Hot Filling" a tank is when they just hook it up and push the argon in there, the tank heats up and you get a high pressure reading, until the tank cools. If you take a cooler full of ice water to the LWS and put your little cup'o'argon in there while they fill you'll get more gas and less heat, but consider upgrading that puny tank as soon as you drain it (about 1/2 hr of welding w/1200 psi). I leave my 120 overnight at my favorite supplier, and they get it up to 2000. Reply:I've filled a lot of cylinders obver the years. I assume they are talking about the burst disk, that is designed to rupure and vent the cylinder in the even of an over pressure event. Typical rating on a burst disk is 5/3rds the working pressure, or the same pressure they hydro test the cylinder at. Note that burst disks are designed to blow at or BELOW the stated pressure, but 1/2 the working pressure isn't even close.I'd have to agree with the other guys, a 20 is so tiny it's not really worth the hassle. I quickly up sized all my smaller cylinders when I got into welding years ago. Today the smallest inert gas cylinder I have is an 80, and most are 125cf or larger. An 80 hardly lasts 5-6 hours, so I only keep them as "portable" cylinders or as a back up in general..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size.
