When tig welding mild steel, more often than not, my filler rod will get sucked to my base metal. When this happens, it is usually NOT where I want it to go. I did a search and noticed Zapster had this same problem, and he was talking about it all the way back in 2006. Do you guys know what I'm talking about? And if so, do you have a solution?Lincoln Precisoin Tig 1851980's Miller plasma cutter.Used to own...Hobart Tig Mate.
Reply:I have noticed that too, usually when the filler rod is thicker.  I think it is the work piece getting magnetized from the current flow
Reply:It happens.  You are supposed to stab the puddle, not the parent material. Call it a teaching moment and move on. Titanium is the worst. You will have to stop welding to get your rod back much of the time. Two turn tables and a microphone.
Reply:move your ground clamp.Buy American, or don't whine when you end up on the bread line.
Reply:Ground closer to the weld or ground in multiple places.
Reply:when did titanium become magnetic ?

Reply:Yeah it still happens from time to time and I don't think ground placement has anything to do with it..It has happened with the ground 2 inches away from the piece and with it 5 feet away on the other end of a tube..I dunno.I don't care either....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
