I have used some 6011, and like it, the beads didnt look quite as smooth as i would hope for, but not horrific, and I have used just a small amount of 6010, the 6011 slag seems to be tough to remove, I mean remove ALL of it, is 6010 easier to remove the slag if you wanted to go over the weld with 7018? I dont even remember the last time i used 6010, but I know the 6011 takes alot of chipping, chiesel, scribe, etc to remove all the slag. If all of the slag isnt removed, you will get slag inclusion when going over it with 7018 wouldnt you? Is this why Ive always heard that when pipe is welded its usually 6010, then 7018 over it. Im just curious about this, thanks guys, great forum                         Craig
Reply:On tough slag I like to use a knotted cup brush in an angle grinder. They remove slag really well most times. Any bits of slag that remain can be picked out with your hand tool of choice if need be. Give that a try sometime, but cover up with face & eye protection. Those wires will come off with enough force to penetrate skin. City of L.A. Structural; Manual & Semi-Automatic;"Surely there is a mine for silver, and a place where gold is refined. Reply:tanglediver, yes, that is how I clean it up when I have to go over it with something else, i also use a die grinder with a knot brush, i have had plenty of wires stickin out of me.....I started buying stainless steel brushes, they seem to hold up a touch better than the carbon steel ones, but they still shed....and you are right about the face shield/eye protection.......
Reply:with either rod the bulk of the slag should crust off and crumble up pretty easy  ... if not probably too hot.. in the toes, a cup brush..i call this a slagfile..notched with an angle grinder..patched with 7018 after  i used it for a chipping hammer..works real nice, gets into the  toes pretty well, especially  on round joints.. first pic somewhat  shows the radius..it is a halfround so the kerf at the  tips of the " teeth "  are quite thin.. Reply:Cool idea, never seen one of those.....
Reply:i have some esab 6011 rods, and I swear the slag is harder than the weld,  they weld nice though.5p+ slag is several light years easier to remove.XMT 350 MPa, w/D52-DTA 185 TSWHarris of
Reply:I was told a couple of years ago when I was going though my apprentiship at a foundry to use an air needle scaler to remove the slag that was left after chipping. We were working on a rebuilding of the channel furnace and melting furnace. We had to weld a root pass of 6011 then scale the weld then run 2 top passes of 7018 alternating our stop points.
