Ok so as with alot of other newbs, a bench was my first project. I completed an 8 week intro to welding class at my local tech school so now have enough knowledge and skill to be dangerous lol! I wired my garage for220 so I could put the millermatic 185 to use. I went to my local steel yard here in Tampa and loaded up a large sheet  of 3/8" plate. Had it cut to 30x65" for the top. Then (2) 24' sticks of if 1.5" square tube 3/16 wall for the frame, and some 1/4 plate for misc. So far the basic frame is  almost complete. I added some 2.5" tube on the ends to make recievers for my vice, and grinder . O am thinking about building an insert for my vw engine stand to slide into. it will be interesting to see if the table will support a bug motor in the reciever without being tippy. The frame lays 3" inside the top plate on the front and sides and 1" on the back for clamping. I also recessed the front lower cross brace back 6" from the leading edge of the table, so I can stand close to it. I have a few gussets to add, as well as some 1/4 plate to the bottom of the legs for mounting castors, some shelving but it's getting there. Hope to be ready to weld on the top next week. And then get the frame painted. Thanks to all those that have posted your tables I enjoyed reading through the threads to get ideas!
Reply:Good lookin start so far.  Use them square tubes for recievers for a chop saw or a vice and you can keep the top a little less cluttered and more open.  You prolly already planned it that way, but if not thats a good way to go.BobI'm spending my Kids inheritance, I dont like him that much anyway!!!!!!Enuff tools to do the job, enough sense to use em.Anybody got a spare set of kidneys?  Trade?
Reply:Looks h*ll for stout!  You're gonna love using that.(Retired) Professional firefighter, amateur everything else I try to do...Oh yeah:  Go Big Red!   (You know: one of the 12 members of the Big 10 cuz we left the 10 members of the Big 12...)
Reply:Nice start to a sturdy bench. From the looks of it you should not have a problem mounting the bug powerhouse to it.Gordhttp://gordsgarage.wordpress.com/

Reply:Sorry for the delayed update. Things have been crazy and besides taking forever to get it to this point, It took me forever to get time to post lol!I fliped the frame and welded it the top.Once done I had to use my engine hoist to get the table rolled back over since it is so heavy and I am working alone.Once up I was ready to weld on the 1/4" plate feet to mount the 6" castors. once I added the castors I set up my insert for my vise. It's a small one I'll upgrade later. I mounted the vise on a 3/8 plate welded to the insert so I can move it to either end or side of the table. Finally here it is against the wall. I decided to due a tune up on my outboard for my sailboat. I still need to add expanded mesh for a lower shelf and some various crossbars and hangers for clamps grinding wheels etc but it is coming along.
Reply:Wow, great looking bench. Can't wait to get mine started.
