Gentlemen, what kind of solvent would you recommend for the removal of this crap? The part is a Chinese made forged steel sprocket.I have tried:simple greenacetonem.e.kdenatured alcohol (so far the only thing that will even touch it)mineral spiritsenamel reducerburning it off with a torch I can only describe it as a clear liquid with a slightly oily feel to it. Similar to brake fluid. It has a light sulfur smell before welding but smells like burning copper wire during welding*.( After soaking in alcohol and being sprayed with anti-spatter spray, otherwise it cannot be welded through. The arc will not penetrate it.) Weld settings:350° 5mm beadmiller 350p, mig mode, pulse will not work worth a damn because of this crap..045 er70s wire28.5 volts425 ipmstargon 35cfhpositioner table speed 6This video is from when we were still using the U.S made stamped steel sprockets.Darwinian evolution used to fix stupid. Reply:maybe try a wash with dawn dish soap if it can take oil off a duck maybe it can take it off a a sprocket or some gunk or the like engine degreaser any automotive stuff you wanna read up on before ya flame it so ya don't make smoke that can kill ya350P 30A spool gun cut master 51  syncro 250 other stuff " take a dog off the street and make him prosper and he will not bite you sad the same cannot be said for man" i didnt use punctuation just to piss you off
Reply:I've started using starting fluid (ether) for cleaning lots of stuff.  It sprays into tiny nooks and crannies, and I feel reeeely good afterwards.Last edited by Weldordie; 03-06-2012 at 11:28 PM.
Reply:Google ultra 2000 it's preety good stuff.Shake and Bake
Reply:Just a guess but my bet is that it is some crude paraffin based oil. Very abundant and very cheap. And if it has too much sulfur in it for other purposes then it's even cheaper yet. You know they aren't using specially formulated, top notch stuff. Reply:ZEP Big Orange is a great degreaser you can rinse off with water.  Otherwise... M.E.K works great as a solvent.  I use the chlorinated solvents for general cleaning (they're the only ones that still work after CARB got involved) but be weary when using them around welding/cutting equipment.
Reply:you can't use an abrasive to get rid of it? like a 2in roloc disc to shine the metal up.ESAB MigMaster 275Miller Econotwin HFMiller Syncrowave 250

Reply:Paint thinner, or gun wash cleaner, sand it with a 180 grit disc, sandblast it, burn it off with a torch, all of these are good options

Reply:sad thing is a lot!  My buddy owns a agricultural machinery business and he needed to get some pieces built for his equipment out of house as they did not have the equipment to do it themselves and they, shopped around in Canada all over and in the US, and the ended up getting them made in China, 65% cheaper.  It's bloody crazy.......we can get stuff cheaper, made from out materials that were shipped overseas, melted down and made into our product and then SHIPPED back.  They can prodce it cheaper because of the poor labor laws and they don't pay business property taxes....and there are some other things they don't have to worry about. It makes me sick, and people wonder why our North American economy is in the tank.....WELL BUY NORTH AMERICAN AND SUPPORT YOUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS!
Reply:Have you tried kerosene? It normally cuts the waxy coatings.
Reply:I use white gas (Coleman fuel) to degrease most things - 1/2 the cost of MEK/Acetone, dries quick, smells nice and works great.  Do it outside!- "If ya can't be handsome, ya may as well be handy!"   HTP Invertig 201Lincoln Power Mig 255CLincoln SP125+Thermal Dynamics Cutmaster 38

Reply:Thank you for the replies. Looks like I've got more testing to do. Here is a short vid showing the sprockets after they have been soaking in alcohol overnight.Darwinian evolution used to fix stupid. Reply:It's probably just old cosmoline.  Tried Hopps #9 yet?Buy American, or don't whine when you end up on the bread line.Originally Posted by WeldingMachineIt's probably just old cosmoline.  Tried Hopps #9 yet?
Reply:Have you try good old fashion steam?  I used to clean cosmoline out of guns with boiling water and steam.  The in the oil they went.  they usually dried by themselves due to being hot from the boiling water.  Good ole cosmoline I never found any solvent that would clean it out of triggers and springs and the action but steam always worked.
