i was just wondering how many if any of you guys weave the fill pass on pipe or plate .seems like it would be easy to do and not get trapped slag in your welds i have been just using 2 beads for my fill passes but there not coming out consistent or not filling up the gap all the way .got my root and hot pass down and my caps look ok they need a little work also but the more i weld the better i get so it will come with time .
Reply:yes indeedy!some jobs will let you weave, some will not. I worked on one job, we couldn't weld anything wider than 3/8ths. They were serious, too, if they caught you going over, you were fired. We were welding 90 inch pipe with 3/32 7018 stringer beads.Where I'm at now, up to 6 inch pipe can be 3/4" wide with Dual Shield fluxcore, over 6 inch we can go one inch wide, but they don't seem to watch it real close. Some places watch you like a hawk.Last edited by TimmyTIG; 10-28-2013 at 01:21 AM.
Reply:thank you Timmy
Reply:I worked at one fab shop that did a lot of hard wire welding, we did some 48'' 90s welded together, put a weave cap on with hard wire over 2 inches wide. You don't see that too often anymore.
Reply:cant say i ever seen that at all my tech school is funny about stuff like this they wont let us weave our caps at all if we do we fail the test and have to start over .they also don't like me free handing on TIG had a instructor say don't free hand unless i teach you .......... well i taught myself i hate walking the cup but if i have to i can .don't even get me started on what happens when i break out my #9 flex head or mention going union after college is over in a few months |
