I got the idea from this site, and while at work on Friday I drew it out on paper. The idea seemed right in my head, but I had a heck of a time getting the thing to work. I still have to figure out the geometry to get it to bend at least 90 degrees. My design is not quite right because it will only bend to about 80 degrees. Oh well.... my first whack at the idea.... (and never mind the ho-hum mig welds.... I only get to practice 1 day a week......)Pics now: (and one of the weak a$$ chop saw I have (Hitachi is very weak.... shoulda bought the Dewalt)... Reply:Here are some proven designs:http://www.millerwelds.com/interests...bending-brake/http://www.vansairforce.org/tools/http://www.biplaneforum.com/pdfs/brakeplans.pdfIt would appear that the hinge pin location is out of line with the bend tangent and therefore making a rolled edge rather than a crisp brake line. These do make a nice usable weekend project!RogerOld, Tired, and GRUMPYSalesman will call, Batteries not included, Assembly is required, and FREE ADVICE IS WORTH EXACTLY WHAT YOU PAY FOR IT!Dial Arc 250HFThunderbolt 225 AC/DCAssorted A/O torches
Reply:Fexal, you used square tubing for your top and your bend stops at 90 degrees and springs back to 80 degrees. You need to change the top to a piece of angle and then you can go pass 90 degrees. To bend 90 degrees, you need to go pass to allow for the spring back. I hope this helps.
Reply:Hmm, thanks guys, I think you have inspired me to have a go at making a brake myself.those links are very useful, cheers Rog02.
Reply:Here's a write up and pics of a brake I made about 15 years ago. It's a little more work than some but it's also heavier. I've bent 4' of 14ga steel with it. I've since upgraded it a little then right after the upgrade I managed to get a nice 4' box and pan brake at a auction along with a 10' plain brake.   Anyway maybe it'll help somebody get a few more ideas of what can be done. http://www.metalworking.com/DropBox/...iles/brake.txthttp://www.metalworking.com/DropBox/...les/brake1.jpghttp://www.metalworking.com/DropBox/...les/brake2.jpghttp://www.metalworking.com/DropBox/...les/brake3.jpghttp://www.metalworking.com/DropBox/...les/brake4.jpghttp://www.metalworking.com/DropBox/...les/brake5.jpghttp://www.metalworking.com/DropBox/...les/brake6.jpghttp://www.metalworking.com/DropBox/...les/brake7.jpghttp://www.metalworking.com/DropBox/...les/brake8.jpghttp://www.metalworking.com/DropBox/...les/brake9.jpghttp://www.metalworking.com/DropBox/...es/brake10.jpghttp://www.metalworking.com/DropBox/...es/brake11.jpghttp://www.metalworking.com/DropBox/...es/brake12.jpg  And final link is to a pic of it as it sits currently next to it's big brothers.http://members.dslextreme.com/users/.../newstuff2.htm  For more you can go to the link below of my web site and browse some of the pics.Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm
Reply:It looks nice fexal. You should try to make a triangular peice for the bar that clamps down. You could probably get 130 out of it!
