I have a 1962 red face. I'm trying to make the engine idle up when using a grinder. Also, what is the wattage the exciter puts out to aux outlet. I've seen where one can buy a grind-ese or device to cause this to work, but I was hoping to get the info on how to make it myself. I the coil in the R57 idler should be energized when an arc is struck but is there a reed switch that energizes the coil. oh, any help or suggestion will be greatly appreciated.Last edited by mhwelding; 10-31-2013 at 08:49 PM.
Reply:No reed switch with the R-57 idler. Instead it operates on a shunt principle where a small amount of weld current passes from the (+) weld output brush thru the idler coil out to the (+) weld output post to activate it.The Grind-Eze solenoid winding is of a heavier gauge wire to carry the maximum load (~8.7A) capacity of the auxiliary power outlet. I'd say it's conceivable to incorporate the same shunt concept as the R-57 for a Grind-Eze clone with a conventional solenoid valve coil but I've never played around with it to say yes or no.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:Thanks duaneb55.After more research I find that keeping the r57 intact and making some homemade idle up mechanism isn't the best way to go. There are several companies that make just what I need. I've found you and several others have addressed this situation in other posts. Keeping a good r57 intact is possible as well as complete replacement. I was hoping to come up with a simple way to idle up the sa because simplicity usually makes for longevity. Anyway, thanks for getting back to my post. |
