Made up a few socket holders for the top of my toolbox today. Not much welding done, just some plug/tack welds but I figured I'd post them anyways. These are for the sockets I use most often that sit up top rather than in a drawer. 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" Mostly metric, only 6 deep sockets are standard. Now who took my 11mm  1 1/2" x 1/4" for the base for 3/8" & 1/2" sockets. 1 1/4" x 1/4" for the base of the 1/4" sockets. And well you can probably guess the measurements of the round stock used..Used 3/16 stamps for the numbers. They are all clearly visible, the camera and lighting makes some look not so good.Sneak peak at the top secret manufacturing processI think I'm going to make one more to put some standard sockets on even though I don't use them often. I know, I could have bought some holders like normal people do but I like mine better   I think I'm going to try the coating method using heat and oil that I was reading about in a thread on here not long ago. What kind of corrosion protection does burning oil on steel give? I should probably look into that before I go ahead and do it.I'll post up another pic once I decide on what to coat them with and once they are put back in the toolbox.

Reply:How are the pins held in? You might try painting them a dark color and getting a lacquer paint stick and highlighting the letters. P.S I would buy a set.

Reply:Those are about the nicest socket rails I've seen. I just use these from Snap-On. I need them to hold the socket on, so when I bring a rail to the vehicle I'm working on, they all don't fall off."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:Damn, those are nice! I just took the standard socket holders and made a metal frame for them so I didn't have to drill into my toolbox!Miller Performance AD Helmet - Camo Edition Soon to have: Jackson HSL 100 - Forest Digi CamoMiller Thunderbolt AC/DC((Currently at welding school))

Reply:Your socket trays are a nice idea. They look similar to ones that I have been making and selling for years. The problem is that they are time consuming to make and no one wants to pay for my time when they can buy the plastic ones on sale for a smaller price. Everyone seems to love cheap chinese crap. Just a suggestion though, from my experience the short pins would not hold the sockets in place if the trays were bumped, so I switched to making them all with long pins and also found it much easier to place the sockets onto the long pins. Also I always bevel the top of the pin so that there are no sharp edges and also makes socket slide on a bit easier. Once again making the pins becomes very time consuming. Also  I like to make the trays hold more sockets than the plastic ones, and I always have the socket needed for the job. Also I make wrench racks for SAE and Metric wrenches, once again people liked them but wouldnt pay for my time to make them.Any ways happy to see other people experincing the joys of making things for themselves. These are things that will be in our tool boxes for a lifetime and beyond.
